PS/1-Aptiva - What is the FORMAT command?
Applicable to: World-Wide
The FORMAT command is the command used to prepare your diskette (or disk) for use. It makes the diskette ready to receive information, and looks for any defective tracks that might be on the diskette.
The FORMAT command also creates the directory structure, file allocation table (FAT), and system loader. Before formatting a diskette, you should remember that FORMAT will destroy all data on the disk. If you format your fixed disk (your C: drive in most cases), the entire contents of any previously created directories and their files are destroyed.
