3270 Emulation PCI Adapter - Product Overview

The 3270 Emulation PCI Adapter provides convenient high-speed access to 3270 host networks. This interface supports the 3270 data stream. The interface accepts, decodes, and executes commands issued from the PC and the control unit. The 3270 Emulation Adapter provides an interface that allows a PC to emulate an IBM 3278/3279 display station or an IBM 3287 printer.

The advantage of using the 3270 Emulation PCI Adapter instead of a LAN adapter is that the 3270 Emulation card does not require special addresses or reconfigurations when the computer is moved from one location another.

This new adapter card demonstrates IBM's continued support of the 3270 architecture, data stream, and product family.

The IBM 3270 Emulation PCI Adapter in conjunction with a 3270 software application program allows the PC to emulate the functions of a 3278/3279 display station or 3287 printer.

• Works with IBM Personal Communications software for 3270 SNA communications from a Windows 95, 98, or NT client PC.
• One 3270 Emulation PCI adapter allows 4 simultaneous host sessions. PC and host sessions can be active concurrently, with active swapping.
• Supports CUT, 87E, and DFT modes of operation. 87E mode allows the PC to emulate a 3287 printer. DFT processes the 3270 data stream between the control unit and PC.
• Attachment of personal computers to IBM:

• No reconfiguration is required when the PC, with the 3270 Emulation
• PCI Adapter, is moved from one office to the next.
• Connects via coaxial cable, IBM Cabling System media, or telephone twisted pair.

Hardware Requirements for IBM systems:
The IBM 3270 Emulation PCI Adapter operates in any PC equiped with a PCI expansion slot, meeting PCI Specification 2.1, or later. Plug and Play capability is provided with this adapter.

You must provide one of the following cable media:

• Coaxial Cable (RG 62A/U with BNC Connector)
• IBM Cabling System Media (#3174, #3274, #9370 Workstation Subsystem Controller attachment only)
• Telephone twisted pair via a coax-to-twisted pair adapter (length requirements: 100'minimum to 900' maximum)

The following cable connectors and adapters are available from IBM:

• IBM Coax-to-Twisted Pair Adapter (61X4584)
• IBM Coaxial Balun Assembly (8642546)

PC communications to the Host is obtained by attachment to one of the following devices:

• IBM 3174, 3274, and 3276 Control Units
• IBM 4321, 4331, and 4361 Processor Display/Printer Adapter requires a position on the Display/Printer Adapter or on a 4361 (the Workstation Adapter).
• IBM 9370 Information System Workstation Subsystem Controller
• IBM 3174 or 3274 or 9370 Workstation Subsystem Controller via the IBM 3299 Terminal Multiplexer
