Acoustic noise level
Class 3D (office environment)

Note: The noise emission level stated is the declared (upper limit) sound power level, in Bels, for a random sample of machines, typically configured, and operating in idle mode, for example, powered on, but no DASD read/write or other I/O activity. All measurements made in accordance with ANSI S12.10, and reported in conformance with ISO 9296.

Air temperature 0 to 8,000 ft

Air temperature: 8,000 to 10,000 ft

The maximum temperature when the system is on is linearly decreased from 8,000 ft to 10,000 ft.

Software requirements
The ThinkPad 390E family supports the following operating systems: Refer to the considerations section for support issues unique to each operating system.

Previous versions of these operating systems are not supported; for example, PC DOS 6.3, OS/2 2.11, OS/2 Warp Connect V3 with and without WIN-OS/2, OS/2 Warp 3 with and without WIN-OS/2, Windows NT Workstation V3.51, Windows 3.0, and MS-DOS 6.0.

The following IBM system software is supported:

IBM ThinkPad 390E compatibility
IBM tests a large number of commonly used and available hardware options for compatibility with its ThinkPad systems, using supported operating systems and configurations. In general, the user can expect that most IBM and vendor hardware options designed to run with supported operating systems, Intel-compatible system architectures and supported standard I/O interfaces to be compatible with the ThinkPad system. Some configurations, however, may not be compatible.

IBM does not warrant or support vendor hardware options, nor guarantee compatibility of those products with IBM systems. Refer to the applicable warranty and service terms provided by the respective vendors.

For existing IBM hardware options that can be used by the ThinkPad 390E family, refer to the latest Options by IBM (OBI) catalog and Web Site, as well as to the IBM sales configurator. IBM ThinkPad 390E system supports the following industry standard interfaces:

Enhanced parallel port (EPP) & IEEE-1284(ECP) compatible

Serial port, EIA/TIA-232-E interface-16550 compatible

Video port (external display)

PCMCIA

Infrared port

Keyboard, mouse, num-pad connector

Audio out connector (stereo)

Audio in connector

Integrated modem
Most systems, depending on model, have a modem incorporating 56 Kbps(1) data and 14.4 Kbps fax functions. IBM supports the International Telecommunications Union ITU-T V.90 56K standard modem protocol on all models of the ThinkPad 390E system that have an internal programmable modem.
(1) V.90 and other technology modems are designed to receive data at up to 56 Kbps from a compatible service provider, and transmitting data at up to 31.2 Kbps. Public networks currently limit maximum download speeds to about 53 Kbps. Actual speeds depend on many factors and are often less than the maximum possible.

Advanced configuration and power interface (ACPI) compliant
The ThinkPad 390E is ACPI ready. Although ACPI is not installed, the ThinkPad 390E hardware and BIOS support ACPI. While ACPI shows a great deal of promise for the future, numerous problems affect the operation of ACPI on ThinkPad and other notebook systems. Therefore, the ThinkPad 390E comes with Windows 98 running APM mode. When the remaining issues with ACPI are resolved, an upgrade package will be made available on the IBM Web site. The upgrade package will contain operating system updates, device driver updates, and BIOS updates to make ACPI work reliably.

The IBM ThinkPad 390E system has the following standard and optional features
Microprocessor (1)
New and Powerful Intel(R) Mobile Pentium II processors at 333 MHz or 300PE MHz, depending on model, with 256 KB full-speed onboard L2 cache or the new Intel Mobile Celeron(TM) processor at 300 MHz with 128 KB full-speed onboard L2 cache. This L2 cache is on the CPU chip and is a better performer than the ThinkPad 390 512 KB L2 cache.
