Network Station - Obtaining a BOOTP trace

Applicable to: World-Wide

This document discusses gathering bootp trace data (Network Station set for BOOTP, AS/400 has Network Station in its BOOTP table)in the following procedure:

To start the BOOTP trace, you need to create the data area QTODBLOG in library QUSRSYS. On the Os/400 command line, type the following:

CRTDTAARA DTAARA(QUSRSYS/QTODBLOG) TYPE(*CHAR) +
LEN(1) VALUE('Y')

Press the Enter key.

After the data area is created, do the following to activate the trace. On the OS/400 command line, type the following:

ENDTCPSVR *BOOTP

Press the Enter key, then, type the following:

STRTCPSVR *BOOTP

Press the Enter key.

When the trace is activated, you need to have the client perform a BOOTP request. For the Network Station, this should be a reboot cycle.

When the reboot cycle is complete, stop the trace by deleting the data area. On the OS/400 command line type the following:

DLTDTAARA DTAARA(QUSRSYS/QTODBLOG)

Recycle the BOOTP server again to stop the trace. On the OS/400 command line, type the following:

WRKSPLF QTCP

Press the Enter key. You should see a file at or near the end of the list named QPRINT. This will be the BOOTP trace data. Use Option 5 to display the data. What you should see is a list of all of the BOOTP packets received by the server and the servers response if the client is in the BOOTP table.
