Modems - How to access the IBM PCCO BBS or Internet Web site and download files (US)

In order to update your driver files you must first download the correct File(s) from the IBM BBS or Web Site. Since new driver files may be released at any time, you need to check the Web Site or the IBM BBS for the latest driver files for your machine. Available sources to assist you are listed below. If you are still uncertain as to whether you have identified the correct file for your system call the IBM Help Center at (800) 772-2227.
Web Site:
If you have Web Browser capability, you can use the following URL to obtain the required information and download the file.
1. Go to the URL "http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/files.html"
2. Once you are on the IBM PC Company Download Library , scroll down to the lower part of the page and you should see a section that reads: "To locate files that interest you either: SEARCH: Search for a file using our search form, or LIST: List a file area, sorted by date or name."
3. Click on "List" After clicking on "List" you will see a section that reads: "List all the files{choices listed here}sorted by date "name"
4. Page down until you find the diskette for your machine. Note: Most of the diskettes will also have the read me documentation listed as a separate file using a standard naming convention as follows: filename.txt Readme txt for (listing of applicable machines).
5. Once you have found the required file, click on the file to begin the download process. The specifics of the download process may vary according to the WEB browser you are using. Most will present a window at this point to allow you to specify the directory for the file to be downloaded in to.

PCCO BBS:
IBM BBS - You may also log on, search and download the required files directly from the IBM BBS. The phone number is (919) 517-0001. Detailed instructions on using the Hyperterminal application which is included with your ThinkPad Preloaded software follows in the next section.

Using the Hyperterminal Application:
The following steps detail how you download the necessary file from the IBM BBS using Hyperterminal:
1. Start Hyperterminal by clicking on the START button, then select Programs, Accessories, and then Hyperterminal. When the hyperterminal group appears, double click on the icon HYPERTRM.
2. If the Local Information Screen appears, enter your area code and any dial prefix that may be required and click on OK.
3. For New Connection, enter IBM Bulletin Board and press ENTER.
4. For the Phone Number screen, enter the following information as below:

Country Code: United States of America (1 )
Area Code: 919
Phone Number: 517-0001
The Connect Using field should default to the correct value and will state the modem you currently have installed.

5. Click on OK to continue.
6. For the CONNECT screen, Your Location should be set to default location. Click on DIAL to continue.
7. Once the connection is made you will hear loud squealing noises. This is normal. At this point enter your first and last name as requested.
8. Press ENTER at each prompt until you are asked to register. Answer Y for yes to this prompt.
9. When asked for ANSI Graphics answer N for No.
10. Type in the password you would like to use for your BBS account. (The first time you log on, you create a password of your own choosing). You will be asked to retype the password again for verification. NOTE: Do not forget your password. You will need it the next time you log on.
11. Enter the personal information as requested.
12. When the BBS News screen comes up, type N and hit ENTER to each prompt until the main BBS menu appears asking "What command would you like to execute? "
13. Type D for download and press ENTER.
14. Type in the ThinkPad driver Filename for your ThinkPad. (e.g. SYSTPW14O.EXE)
15. When asked to select a download protocol, type Z for Z-Modem, and then press ENTER.
16. Answer N for no to the request for auto-logoff.
17. A window should appear showing you the download process.
18. Once the file has completed transferring, the main menu for the BBS will reappear. Enter G for good-bye to logoff and press ENTER.
19. Once you close the Hyperterminal Window it will ask "Do you want to save session IBM Bulletin Board"? Click on YES.

Creating the driver diskette:
Now that you have the driver file downloaded you have to create the driver diskette.
1. At this point you will still have the Hyperterminal Window open which came up when you did step 1. Scroll down this window and you will the file which you downloaded. Double-Click on the icon and a window will come up.
2. Press Enter to read License Agreement.
3. Read the license agreement and at the end press Y to accept the agreement then press ENTER.
4. The program will then ask you to insert a High-Density Floppy Diskette in Drive A:. Do so then press ENTER
5. A percent complete message will then come up. When it reaches 100% then hit N for No after it asks to create another. You now have a driver diskette.
