TR4 Internal SCSI Tape Drive - Drive not supported with PIIX Bus Master IDE drivers in Windows NT

Applicable to: World-Wide

Issue:
I installed TR4 IDE tape drives into all three of these systems. After installing the Seagate Backup Exec for 95/NT software that shipped with the drives, I started a full backup. The backup began and seemed to be proceeding normally. After processing less then 100 files (this number varies each time I try to do a backup) the tape drive stops reacting. The software continues to operate normally except that no files are being processed. No error messages are displayed. The machine will stay in this state indefinitely. When I look at the task manager the Backup Exec software shows that it is still running. If I cancel the backup, the software responds by asking if I am sure that I want to cancel the backup. I say yes. But nothing changes. The only way to get out of the backup is to call up the task manager and do an End Task.

Problem Analysis:
IBM preload installs the PIIX Bus Master IDE drivers for Windows NT by default. The tape drive is not supported with Bus Master IDE drivers and the IDE ATAPI 1.2 drivers should be installed.

Solution:
The PIIX Bus Master IDE drivers should be removed and the ATAPI drivers added. To remove the PIIX Bus Master IDE drivers and add the ATAPI drivers do the following:

  1. Close any running applications.
  2. Select "My Computer".
  3. Open the "Control Panel" Folder.
  4. Invoke the "SCSI Adapters" appellate.
  5. Click on the folder tab labeled "Drivers". The currently installed SCSI adapter drivers will be listed in the Drivers menu.
  6. The display should list the PIIX Bus Master IDE driver, "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller". If the "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller" driver is listed, select it. Then, select "Remove" to remove the driver.
  7. Select "Add..." to add a new driver.
  8. From the "Install Driver" dialog box, select "Standard mass storage controllers". (Note: this text may vary according to the release of Windows NT*.)
  9. In the SCSI Adapter dialog, select the default ATAPI driver, "IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/Dual-channel PCI IDE Controller" and click "Ok" to install the driver. (Note: this text may vary according to the release of Windows NT*.)
  10. When prompted, reboot the system as directed in order for the changes to take effect.
