Servers - Microsoft Cluster Server resources fail after applying SP4

Applicable to: AP-S, Canada, LA, United States

Source: RETAIN tip H165468

Abstract:
MICROSOFT CLUSTER SERVER RESOURCES FAIL AFTER APPLYING SP4

SYMPTOM:
After applying Microsoft Service Pack 4 in a Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS) environment, cluster resources that rely on NetBIOS will fail. The following event will be written to the Windows NT system event log:
"Event ID 1051: Cluster Network Name resource '<Network Name>' cannot be brought on-line because it does not depend on an IP Address resource. Please add an IP Address dependency."

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:
- The system is any IBM system certified to run MSCS.
- The system is configured with Microsoft Cluster Server version 1.0.
- The system has Microsoft Service Pack 4 applied.

NOTE: Clustering Configurations that have been tested with current models of IBM Netfinity and PC Servers at the following URL: http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/compat/clustering/matrix.shtml

FIX:
The failing resource(s) will have a dependence on an IP cluster resource(s) within the same cluster group. Right click this IP cluster resource and choose properties, then select the "Parameters" tab from the Properties windows, check the "Enable NetBIOS for this address" box. Bring the failed cluster group on-line.

DETAILS:
Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 4 has added a newly definable parameter to the IP cluster resource, titled "Enable NetBIOS for this address". Previous to Windows NT Service Pack 4 this parameter was always enabled. After Service Pack 4 is applied, the problem arises when an application creates an IP and Network Name resource and the required dependencies. The application is not aware of the "Enable NetBIOS of this address" parameter, so it is not set. When the newly created group is brought on-line the Network Name resource will fail. A fix for Oracle "Fail Safe" should be available from Oracle within the next several weeks (Dated: 12/7/98). If Microsoft Cluster Administrator is running remotely, i.e., not on either node in the cluster, you must update the remote system to Windows NT Service Pack 4. This will allow you to view the new "Enable NetBIOS of this address" parameter from the Microsoft Cluster Administration program.
