Description: Thinkpad 770 8.1GB IDE HDD

Important Partitioning Information:
To achieve the full capacity of your Hard Disk Drive, it will need to be partitioned and formatted before use. The procedure depends on how it will be used.

If your Hard Disk Drive will be the boot device that contains your operating system, begin at Step A.

Note: You will need a DVD or CD-ROM drive to restore the system preload. For use as a second Hard Disk Drive in the Ultra-bay, (not the disk drive that contains your operating system) begin at step B.

A. Restore the System Preload:
The enclosed Recovery CD-ROM Boot Diskette when used with the Recovery CD-ROM that shipped with your system, restores the original System Preload into the primary DOS partition of the Hard Disk.

Caution: Before creating an extended DOS partition, you must first install the recovery System Preload. The System Preload installation process will fail to load if you create the extended partition first.

1. Pace the recovery CD-ROM that shipped with your ThinkPad 770 into the CD-ROM or DVD drive and insert the Recovery CD-ROM Boot Diskette in the A:drive. Power-on and boot the system.

2. Follow the instructions to restore the System Preload. When complete, remove the diskette and CD-ROM and re-boot your system. Proceed to step B.

B. Create the Extended Partition and Logical Drives:
1. Select START on the task bar, select MS-DOS Prompt, type FDISK and press enter from the DOS command prompt.

2. When prompted, make your selection for Large Disk Support Select [N] for multiple partition sizes less than 2.1GB for each partition. Select [Y] for multiple partition sizes greater than 2.1GB for each partition.

3. FDISK displays the message current fixed disk drive from the FDISK menu. The default is for the primary drive. If multiple drives are used, ensure that the correct drive has been identified.

4. From the Disk Option Menu, select 1Create DOS Partition or Logical DOS Drive and press enter.

5. From the DOS partition or Logical Drive menu, select 2 Create Extended DOS Partition.

6. After you have created the extended DOS partition, you may create multiple logical drives. Follow the instructions to customize your partition and logical drives.

7. When complete, press Esc to exit FDISK. Shut down your system and re-boot for the changes to take effect.

Note: Do not hibernate your system before completing step 8.

8. Select START from the task bar and select MS-DOS prompt. From the MS-DOS prompt, you will need to format all the new logical drives that you created in step 6. For example: Type FORMAT D: (where D: is the logical drive).

Caution: Do not format your C: drive.
