Aptiva - How can I safely delete WINHELP.BMK when Windows prompts me to do so?
Applicable to: United States
Question:
How Can I Safely Delete WINHELP.BMK When Windows Prompts Me To Do So?
Answer:
Microsoft Windows users may encounter the message "Bookmarks are damaged". The message tells a user to delete the WINHELP.BMK file. This file is a Windows program file used by the HELP function. Although it is normal to be cautious before deleting program files, it is okay to delete this file. When WINHELP.BMK becomes corrupt, Windows tells you to delete the file because it is created by Windows when the HELP function is used. If the file already exists as a damaged file, Windows cannot recreate the file until the damaged file has been removed.
ATTENTION:
If you have IBM OS/2 2.0 installed on your system, DO NOT follow the instructions in the article. Instead, please search this database for:
OS/2 2.0, then Troubleshoot.
If you do not have OS/2, then the file can be deleted using DOS or Windows. Do one of the following:
OPTION 1:
- Go to the File Manager in the Windows program.
- Double click on the WINDOWS directory to get a list of files in this directory.
- Scroll through the list until you find the WINHELP.BMK file.
- Highlight this file name.
- Then, click on FILE and choose DELETE.
- Click on DELETE to confirm deletion of the C:\WINDOWS\WINHELP.BMK file.
OPTION 2:
- Choose the DOS Prompt icon.
- If you are not at the C:\WINDOWS prompt, type: CD\WINDOWS
- Press [Enter].
- Type: DEL WINHELP.BMK
- Press [Enter].
- Type: EXIT and press [Enter] to go back to Windows.
After you exit Windows and restart the program, you should no longer see an error message.
