Aptiva - 2158/2163/2164 Considerations - PREMEND causing illegal operation during first boot
Applicable to: World-Wide
Description:
During the very first End-customer first boot, we will see an error window titled:"premend"
Error text:
"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor"
Register data:
This was frequently seen in the Japanese Preload and once in the US Preload. After hundreds of tests, Acer has not seen this in the US or any other language.
Models affected:
2158, 2163, and 2164
Norton AntiVirus
How to duplicate:
Power on system and follow the first boot sequence, when the final restart completes and the Windows 98 Welcome Windows appears the error message may appear.
Root cause:
Do not have root cause at this time from Vendor.
NOTE: Japan Preload has changed to User install of Norton AntiVirus to resolve this issue.
Workaround:
This is a one time error, the premend utility correctly updates the necessary registry entries but does not update the wininit.ini so the premend.exe will not be deleted. If premend.exe is run again, it will not do anything.
