IBM IntelliStation / IBM PC300PL / Netfinity 3000 - Intermittent POST errors after cycling AC power

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom
After cycling the AC power (plugging/unplugging the power cord), the following errors may be seen during, or following POST:

PXE-E05: EEPROM Checksum error

Alert on Lan (AoL) reports a DMI failure (invalid checksum)

The system fails to connect to the LAN via the integrated Ethernet adapter.

Problem Isolation Aids
This tip applies to the following machine types and models:

IBM PC300PL Series 6862/6892
IBM IntelliStation E Pro Series 6893
Netfinity 3000 Server Type 8476

The POST error condition will only occur after the AC power has been cycled. If a customer connects the AC power cord and boots the system without an error message being displayed, there is NO chance that the error condition will occur until the AC power is re-cycled.

The error condition may be seen more often on systems where a power strip or surge protector is used to power the system off and on frequently.

Fix
The system AC power must be cycled (unplugged/plugged) to clear the error condition.

1. Power off the system.

2. Cycle the AC power by disconnecting, then reconnecting the AC power cord. This can be done by either disconnecting the power cord from the wall outlet, or from the power supply.

3. Power on and reboot the system.

If the POST error condition persists after recycling the AC power and rebooting the system, replace the system board with the appropriate FRU number for the system being serviced.
