TP 600,770/E/ED - How to have the IR port, serial port, and ACP modem enabled at the same time

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
Trying to enable the IR port, serial port, and ACP modem at the same time for use on the ThinkPad 600 or ThinkPad 770/E/ED (not all models of the 770 have a built in modem).

CONFIGURATION:
Any ThinkPad 600 or 770/E/ED with the built in ACP modem running Windows 95.

SOLUTION:
The steps provided here assume that you are still working with the default configuration of the ThinkPad (IR enabled on COM 1, modem enabled on COM 2 and the serial port disabled). If you are adding another device to your ThinkPad, such as a network PC Card see the note at the end of the document before proceeding for additional information.

Changing the resources for your audio device
1.) Go to Device Manager by clicking on Start, then Settings, then Control Panel, and then System.
2.) Click on the Device Manager tab in the System Properties window.
3.) Go to the Sound, video and game controllers section and double-click on Crystal PnP Audio System CODEC.
4.) Click on the Resources tab.
5.) Click in the box Use automatic settings to remove the check mark.
6.) Click on the word Interrupt Request once in the Resource settings window so that it is highlighted and then click on the Change Settings button.
7.) Click on the Up arrow to the right of the Value field until it says 9. In the Conflict information window it should say that there are no conflicting devices. Click on OK.
8.) Click on OK again. You will get an error message about forcing a configuration. Click on Yes to continue.

Changing the resources for your IR port
1.) In Device Manager, go to the Ports (COM & LPT) section and double-click on Built-in Infrared port on laptop or desktop (COM1).
2.) Click on the Resources tab.
3.) Click in the box Use automatic settings to remove the check mark.
4.) Click on the Down arrow to the right of where it says Basic configuration 0000. Select Basic configuration 0004.
5.) Click on the word Interrupt Request once in the Resource settings window so that it is highlighted and then click on the Change Settings button.
6.) Click on the Up arrow to the right of the Value field until it says 5. In the Conflict information window it should say that there are no conflicting devices. Click on OK.
7.) Click on OK again. You will get an error message about forcing a configuration. Click on Yes to continue.

Changing the resources for your serial port
1.) In Device Manager, go to the Ports (COM & LPT) section and double-click on Communications Port (COM1).
2.) On the General tab in the Device usage section, make sure that there is not a check mark beside Disable in this hardware profile.
3.) Click on the Resources tab. If your serial port was disabled then you will need to click on the Set Configuration Manually button next.
4.) Click in the box Use automatic settings to remove the check mark.
5.) Click on the Down arrow to the right of where it says Basic configuration 0000. Select Basic configuration 0002.
6.) Click on OK. You will get an error message about forcing a configuration. Click on Yes to continue.

After completing the above procedures, close Device Manager. You will then need to shutdown Windows 95. After the ThinkPad has powered off, wait a few seconds and then power on the ThinkPad. Your ThinkPad is now properly configured to use the IR port, serial port, and the modem.

Note:
By having the serial port, IR port, and the modem enabled at the same time, you are using all the available IRQs on your system. If you are going to be installing a PC Card that requires the use of an IRQ then you will need to somehow free up a resource to allow this. The DSP controller in the ThinkPad 600 will allow you to share the IRQ between the DSP controller and the modem. This will free up one IRQ for use with another device. For instructions on how to share IRQs you can refer to your On-line User's Guide that is preloaded on your ThinkPad, go to the On-line User's Guide on the web, or view the on-line document.

After enabling the sharing of IRQs between the DSP controller and the modem you will have IRQ 10 free. Most network PC Cards like to use IRQ 9 however. To accommodate for this, simply move the audio device to IRQ 10, instead of 9 (following the instructions detailed above) which will then free up the appropriate IRQ for your network adapter.
