TP 380/D/E/ED,385D/E/ED - Compact Flash and certain ATA PC Cards will not work with SystemSoft CardWizard

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
Compact Flash ATA cards, such as the Kodak PictureCard and ATA Adapter, Sandisk CompactFlash and Adapter, as well as the Sandisk Flashdisk SDP3B-2
will not work in the ThinkPad 380/385/E/D series machines. These cards are typically used in Digital Cameras and PDAs. They cannot be enabled in either PnP or CardSoft mode.

Configuration:
Any ThinkPad 380 or 380E series machine, and CardWizard for Windows 95. The problem only affects the Cirrus Logic PCIC in these machines, so it does work in the port replicator as well as 380/385XD machines (with TI Controllers).

Cards tested include Sandisk CompactFlash, Kodak PictureCard (these both have removable flash media that fits into a PC Card size ATA adapter) as well as a Type II Sandisk Flashdisk card.

Workaround:
Removing the CardWizard software as detailed in the readme.txt file in the c:\cardwork folder will allow Windows 95 to properly manage the card. Note that
while this will work, the supported and recommended configuration is to use SystemSoft CardWizard on the 380 machines.

Solution:
The cards can be enabled in CardSoft Mode if the CardWorks drivers are reinstalled with ATA support. In order to do this, follow the directions below.

This solution works with all released versions of CardWizard software, to download the latest version click here.

Reinstall the CardWorks to enable ATA card devices
1. Insert the CardWorks for Windows 95 diskette into the diskette driver.
2. Run Setup.exe in the diskette.
3. Select "Custom" installation, not "Typical" installation.
4. Make sure "ATA Cards" is selected in the Customer Installation Options menu. (Other devices (SRAM Card, FTL, FFS) on the menu should not be selected unless necessary.)
5. Follow the installation instructions on the screen, but do not restart when prompted.

Edit \cardwork\cardid.ini file to enable the library entry for PCMCIA hard disks
1. Using a text editor such as notepad, open c:\cardwork\cardid.ini.
2. Find the following statement (around the bottom line).

; CardLib=GENATA.CLB

3. Remove the semicolon in the statement.
4. Save and close the file and reboot the system.

You will find the Kodak Picture Card or SanDisk COMPACTFLASH will be enabled in the CardSoft mode, and there are two Removable Disks (for slot 1 and 2)
in the "My Computer" panel.

Hint is available in the readme file as follows:

CardID Settings for CardWorks
CardID is a CardSoft real mode client responsible for configuring modems and CardSoft mode ATA disks. CardWorks supports editing many of the setting in its initialization file, CARDID.INI. Some settings may have to be changed by editing the file with a text editor for best results under Windows 95 and CardWorks.

On the other hand, if you wish to use a card in CardSoft mode, you may have to enable the library entry for the card. In particular, the GENATA.LIB library is commented out of CARDID.INI by default. This library controls most PCMCIA hard disks. If you wish to use PCMCIA hard disks in CardSoft mode, you should remove the semicolon from the beginning of the line which contains GENATA.LIB.

Additional Information:
There are points to remember when using CardSoft Mode for ATA cards. The card will not use an IRQ as it will when used in PnP mode, it will also NOT show up in Windows 95 Device Manager. It's properties can be viewed by using the CardWizard application. Additionally, using CardSoft Mode ATA support will cause a drive letter to be assigned for each available PC Card Slot, whether or not the card is installed. This will cause the CD-ROM drive letter to change.
