IBM PC300GL (Type 6275, 6285) - A:> drive seen as B:> with LS120 diskette drive

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
After installing a LS120 120MB "Superdisk" diskette drive, the 1.4MB diskette drive A: is seen as "B:" diskette drive.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:
This tip applies to IBM PC300GL Series 6275/6285 systems preloaded with Windows 95 or Windows NT.

This tip may also apply to other models of IBM PC and IntelliStation systems preloaded with Windows 95 or Windows NT, and installed with a LS120 diskette drive.

FIX:
Uninstall the Intel PIIX Busmaster IDE driver and reinstall the native Windows 95 or Windows NT IDE device driver.

For Windows NT:

1. Close any running applications.

2. Select "My Computer".

3. Open the "Control Panel" Folder.

4. Invoke the "SCSI Adapters" applet.

5. Click on the folder tab labeled "Drivers". The currently installed SCSI adapter drivers will be listed in the Drivers menu. The display should list the PIIX Bus Master IDE driver "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller".

6. If the "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller" driver is listed, select it. Then select "Remove" to remove the driver.

7. Select "Add..." to add a new driver.

8. From the "Install Driver" dialog box, select "Standard mass storage controllers."

9. In the SCSI Adapter dialog, select the default ATAPI driver, "IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/Dual-channel PCI IDE Controller," then click "Ok" to install the driver.

10. When prompted, reboot the system as directed in order for the changes to take effect.

For Windows 95:

1. Create the Intel Win95 Busmaster driver Z23T11A.EXE on a diskette from the RTC, or the IBM File Repository.

Click here to obtain this file:-

2. Insert the Intel Busmaster driver diskette into the A: drive.

3. Open a DOS window and type "a:setup". Press <Enter>.

4. After the install Wizard starts, click the NEXT button in the Welcome panel.

5. Click the DE-INSTALL button in the Select Components panel.

6. The driver will be de-installed. You will then be asked to restart Windows. Click "OK", and remove the diskette from the A: drive.

7. When the system reboots, the Update Device Driver Wizard will appear. Do NOT reinsert the Intel Busmaster driver diskette. Click NEXT, and the Wizard will locate the native Windows 95 OSR2.x driver "Intel 82371AB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller" on the hard disk. Click the NEXT button.

8. When prompted to restart the system, click YES. If there is more than one IDE device in the system, you may be prompted to restart Windows 95 more than once.
