TP 760,765 - Considerations for Windows 98

Considerations
NOTE: IBM does not warrant that every function and operation described in the IBM or Microsoft® documentation will work or be free from limitations when the Windows 98 Upgrade is used with your ThinkPad computer. This document contains a list of hints, tips, and limitations that IBM is aware of on specific ThinkPad models with Windows 98 Upgrade installed. If you have not already installed Windows 98 please follow the ThinkPad Windows 98 Upgrade or Installation instructions available on the IBM Web Site.
Power Management and the Windows 98 Standby Function (Suspend)
The computer does not resume properly from Standby (Suspend) or the computer does not work properly after resuming from Standby (Suspend).
Models: ThinkPad 760ED, 760XD, and 765D models.
Issue: When the system resumes from Standby (Suspend) mode, the LCD screen goes blank and only a blinking cursor appears in the left upper corner of the screen.
Cause: When the ThinkPad resumes from Standby mode, the current system BIOS is unable to properly restore the MPEG function on the computer.
Resolution: Obtain the latest ThinkPad System Program Service Diskette and update the ThinkPad's system BIOS. Please refer to the ThinkPad 760x/765x Windows 98 Upgrade/Installation Guide for instructions on how to update your ThinkPad's system BIOS.
The computer does not resume properly from Standby (Suspend) or the computer does not work properly after resuming from Standby (Suspend).
Models: ThinkPad 760CD, 760E/ED, 760XD, and 765D models.
Issue: When the ThinkPad resumes from Standby (Suspend) mode, the telephony and audio functions do not work.
Cause: This is a known issue with Windows 98, the vcomm.vxd and unimodem.vxd files must be replaced.
Resolution: Please refer to the ThinkPad 760x/765x Windows 98 Upgrade/Installation Guide for instructions on how to obtain and install this fix.
The computer does not enter Standby (Suspend) mode.
Models: ThinkPad 760C/CD, 760E/ED, 760XD, and 765D models.
Issue: The computer does not enter Standby mode.
Cause: Windows 98 has disabled the power management features such as Standby because Windows 98 has detected an early version of the Mwave DSP modules.
Resolution: Install the latest version of the ThinkPad Mwave DSP software on your computer. Please refer to the ThinkPad 760x/765x Windows 98 Upgrade/Installation Guide to obtain instructions on how to install this software on your computer.
Docking Station and Power Management
Slot or drive letters change when ThinkPad is docked.
Models: ThinkPad 380, 380D, 760x, and 765x models (excluding the 760C/CD and 760L/LD models).
Issue: PCMCIA socket numbers(#) are in reversed order when the system is attached to a port replicator with PCMCIA/CardBus slots and/or docking station. This occurs for all cold/warm/hot docking conditions.
Cause: Windows 98 assigns socket numbers according to the sequence that it finds them. This is by design of Windows 98.
Resolution: Functionally this creates no issue for your ThinkPad. Please rely on the socket numbers displayed on the 'Socket Status' under PC Card (PCMCIA) Properties for the actual PCMCIA socket locations. The PC Card (PCMCIA) Properties can be found in the Windows 98 Control Panel.
Display Driver and Multiple Monitor Support
The LCD or video display is not behaving normally.
Models: ThinkPad 760x, 765x, and 770x models.
Issue: The screen size changes when the system is warm docked.
Cause: At the point of wake up and docking initialization, Windows 98 detects a new configuration and sets the display to a default VGA mode. This occurs only when the configuration is new.
Resolution: Reset the screen size back to its original configuration by using the Display Properties under Windows 98.
ThinkPad Mwave DSP and ThinkPad Modem Support.
Mwave does not work.
Models: All ThinkPad models with a built-in modem.
Issue: The system's modem or COM port devices do not function and the following message appears on the screen: "device is not responding, make sure the device is plugged in...".
Cause: The system's Infrared(IR) or Fast Infrared(FIR) port may be sharing the same Interrupt Request (IRQ) as the system's communications port or modem.
Resolution: To free up the IRQ resource, disable the IR device. If you want the IR device enabled, you should use the Windows 98 Device Manager to manually set the IRQ for either the IR port or the device sharing an IRQ with (COM port or modem) and change them so that the IR port has its own discrete IRQ. On some ThinkPads there may not be any free IRQ's available, in this case, you will need to disable the IR or another device (such as a COM or LPT port) in order to free up an IRQ.
Mwave does not work.
Models: ThinkPad 760CD.
Issue: The Mwave modem is non-functional after hot inserting a PCMCIA Ethernet card.
Cause: Windows 98 does not handle The Mwave DSP resources correctly. If the ThinkPad has no readily available IRQs, hot inserting a PCMCIA Ethernet card after having resumed from Standby or Hibernate will cause an internal Mwave modem error.
Resolution: Perform one of the following to avoid this issue:
o Remove or disable another device(s) to free up an IRQ.
o Do not hot insert the PCMCIA Ethernet network card.
o Do not use Standby or Hibernate mode if you plan to hot-insert the PCMCIA Ethernet network card.
Mwave does not work.
Models: ThinkPad 760x and 765x models with Mwave DSP support.
Issue: The Mwave modem doesn't function after hot docking.
Cause: This is caused by some issues in the Windows 98 resource configuration manager when the ThinkPad is docked to an IBM SelectaDock II and the Mwave DSP internal modem is configured as COM 1.
Resolution: Please contact Microsoft or configure the Mwave modem to use COM2.
Noisy Audio.
Models: ThinkPad 760x and 765x models with Mwave DSP support.
Issue: Audio may be noisy when playing Cinepack, Indeo, or MS-Video 1 movies.
Cause: IBM is looking into this.
Resolution: None.
Preloaded application considerations for Windows 98
Digital Video Producer
Version 5.0b is the earliest version of Digital Video Producer that is recommended to be used when running Windows 98. If you are running version 5.0 of DVP but not sure if it is version 5.0, 5.0a, or 5.0b, you can check by following the procedure outlined below:
1. In Windows Explorer, go to the C:\Program Files\Asymetrix\DVP50 directory.
2. Right click on the file DVP50.EXE and select Properties .
3. Click on the Version tab.
If you are running version 5.0, you can download a patch to update you to version 5.0b. To download the patch, you can go to Asymetrix's web page at http://www.asymetrix.com/products/dvp5/patch.html .
