TP 600,770/E/ED - Disabling the UltraBay device swap feature to free an IRQ

Applicable to: World-Wide

You can free up an additional IRQ on your ThinkPad by disabling the UltraBay device swap feature on your ThinkPad. By doing so, you will free up IRQ 15, but you will no longer be able to warm swap your floppy disk drive and the CD-ROM drive in the UltraBay of your ThinkPad. To disable this feature, follow the procedure outline below:

1. Click on Start ==>Programs ==>ThinkPad ==>ThinkPad Configuration.
2. In the ThinkPad Configuration window, click on the UltraBay icon -
3. Remove the check mark from the box that says Enable IDE device Hot/Warm swap.
4. Click OK.
5. You will get a message that states that you need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Make sure there are no other open applications and then click on Yes to restart the computer.

Remember: After disabling this feature, you will not be able to swap the floppy disk drive and the CD-ROM drive in the UltraBay. To have the external floppy drive connector active at boot up so that you can use the floppy drive externally, you can type PS2 FDD E from a DOS command prompt.

You can free an additional resource by having the DSP controller and the ACP modem share resources. This would free up IRQ 10 on your ThinkPad for another device that you are installing or attaching to your ThinkPad. Click here, for instructions on how to do this.
