Considerations
NOTE: IBM does not warrant that every function and operation described in the IBM or Microsoft® documentation will work or be free from limitations when the Windows 98 Upgrade is used with your ThinkPad computer. This document contains a list of hints, tips, and limitations that IBM is aware of on specific ThinkPad models with the Windows 98 Upgrade installed. If you have not already installed Windows 98 please follow the ThinkPad Windows 98 Upgrade or Installation instructions available on the IBM Web Site.
Power Management and the Windows 98 Standby Function (Suspend)
The computer does not resume properly from Standby (Suspend) or the computer does not work properly after resuming from Standby (Suspend).
Models: All ThinkPad models.
Issue: The ThinkPad entered Standby (Suspend) mode while a MPEG file or video capture was playing and now is unable to resume from Standby mode (the screen looks like it is frozen).
Cause: The ThinkPad does not support the Standby function while the system is playing a MPEG file or video capture.
Resolution: Do not place your system in Standby while playing MPEG or Video capture.
The computer does not resume properly from Standby (Suspend) or the computer does not work properly after resuming from Standby (Suspend).
Models: All ThinkPad models with IBM AntiVirus installed.
Issue: The Standby (Suspend) timer does not work.
Cause: The IBM AntiVirus program is open in the background, and periodically, it will automatically check the hard disk for viruses. The Standby timer detects this activity and keeps the system from entering Standby mode.
Resolution: To enable Standby mode using the Standby timer, please follow the instructions below to prevent the IBM AntiVirus application from running in the background:
1. Start IBM AntiVirus program.
2. On the Start-up Menu click Automated check.
3. Select either Never (the program will not automatically check for viruses) or Every boot (it will only check for viruses each time you start Windows 98).
4. Click on Save Settings and close the IBM AntiVirus window.
The computer does not resume properly from Standby (Suspend) or the computer does not work properly after resuming from Standby (Suspend).
Models: All ThinkPad models.
Issue: The computer takes longer to return from Standby (Suspend) mode under Windows 98 than it did under Windows 95. This is most noticeable when the system is placed in Standby mode after a file has finished being copied to the ATA PC Card device.
Cause: Windows 98 unloads/loads each device driver when entering/returning from Standby mode. This is the reason why the system takes more time than usual to return from Standby mode.
Resolution: If you are using an ATA PC Card, this is a known issue with Windows 98. Please contact Microsoft or the card vendor for future fixes. As a work around, you should stop the ATA device before putting the system in Standby mode. This will shorten the length of time that it takes the system to resume from Standby.
The computer does not resume properly from Standby (Suspend) or the computer does not work properly after resuming from Standby (Suspend).
Models: All ThinkPad models.
Issue: It takes more than one keystroke to wake up the computer from the Turn off monitor (Screen off) state.
Cause: The first keystroke will wakeup the computer, but a second keystroke is needed to wake up the operating system and restore the screen.
Resolution: Move the TrackPoint or press the Shift key to wake up the computer from the Turn off monitor state.
Enabling the Power Management functions.
Models: All ThinkPad models.
Issue: The System Power Management settings are automatically disabled.
Cause: Prior to Windows 98, the system BIOS controlled certain functions of power management and would automatically enable these functions. In Windows 98, the operating system controls power management functions. When you install Windows 98 the power management functions are disabled so you must enable these functions in order to use them.
Resolution: In Power Management Properties (located in the Windows 98 Control Panel), select the Power Schemes tab and set the System standby, Turn of monitor, and Turn off hard disk options.
Docking Station and Power Management
Which docking station configurations does Windows 98 support for my ThinkPad computer?
Models: All ThinkPad models that support a docking station.
Issue: Windows 98 supports only a limited set of combinations between the ThinkPads and docking stations.
Cause: This is by design of Windows 98.
Resolution: Valid configurations of ThinkPads and docking stations are summarized as follows:
Note: Windows 98 supports only a limited set of docking configurations for ThinkPad models that support docking stations. Although the following table is a official set of valid configurations from Microsoft, other docking combinations may work on Windows 98 with some limitations of supported cards and conditions.
System Unit |
Docking Station |
Remarks |
ThinkPad 760C/CD |
Dock-1, Dock-2 |
ISA card, PC Card support only. |
ThinkPad 760E/ED, 760EL/ELD, 760XD/XL, and 765D/L |
SelectaDock-I/II |
CardBus PC cards are only supported in the PC Card slots located on the system unit. |
ThinkPad 600, 770, & 770E/ED |
SelectaDock-I/II* |
3rd IDE device with IRQ 11, I/O address 1E8 resources is not supported in the docking unit. |
(*) If you want to use the PC Card slots on the SelectaDock-I/II with these systems, you will need to install the PC Card Features for SelectaDock-I/II provided by IBM. Please refer to the ThinkPad 600 & 770x Windows 98 Upgrade/Installation Guide for instructions on how to enable the PC Card slots on these ThinkPad models.
The System does not enter Standby (Suspend) mode while docked.
Models: All ThinkPad models that support a docking station.
Issue: The ThinkPad does not enter Standby mode while docked.
Cause: Windows 98 has some anomalies concerning the PCI device context save upon suspend request and currently rejects the suspend request.
Resolution: Use the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette to apply a registry patch to correct this issue. Please refer to the Windows 98 Upgrade/Installation Guide of the ThinkPad of interest for instructions on how to apply this patch to your computer.
Note: After applying this patch, the default setting is for the ThinkPad to enter Standby mode while docked, however, the docking station will still be consuming power. To enable the docking station to consume less power, you can set your system to 'full suspend' mode by using the ThinkPad Configuration Utility to select the 'Suspend/hibernate while docked' option. This 'full suspend' mode is not recommended when using a SCSI adapter in the docking station because resume may fail due to anomalies in the SCSI device driver under Windows 98. If you still need to place your system in 'full suspend' mode, disable the SCSI adapter on the docking station. To install the ThinkPad Utility on your computer, please refer to the Windows 98 Upgrade/Installation Guide for your ThinkPad model.
The ThinkPad does not wake up from hibernation while docked.
Models: All ThinkPad models that support a docking station or port replicator.
Issue: A POST 195 error occurs when the system is attached to a docking station or port replicator while still in hibernation mode.
Cause: If the system is placed into hibernation mode with a standalone configuration, then wakes-up while connected to a docking station or port replicator, the hardware configuration will become invalid. This is a design limitation of hibernation.
Resolution: Do not attempt to perform this action with any ThinkPad model that supports a docking station or port replicator.
