PHYSICAL CHECK:
- Determine which SCSI Adapter(s)/Controller is present in the PC Server/Netfinity server (the Microcode Update will prompt for a SCSI Adapter/Controller selection when it is booted).

- If a Type 3517, 3518, 3519, 3520 external storage enclosure is attached to the PC Server / Netfinity server, ensure that it is connected securely to the appropriate SCSI Port, and Powered On.

Note: Refer to the Adapter List in this Document for FRU p/n's of Adapters the Update Utility supports.

*********IMPORTANT*********IMPORTANT*********IMPORTANT*********

- DO NOT FLASH HARD DRIVES WITH THE OLDER VERSION 1.03 OF THE UPDATE UTILITY.

- IMPORTANT: FLASHING DRIVES WITH VER 1.03 TO THE FOLLOWING ADAPTERS CAN CAUSE DRIVES TO GO DDD.

- AS SUCH WE HAVE DETERMINED YOU NO LONGER NEED TO FLASH DRIVES ON THE FOLLOWING ADAPTERS. IN VER 1.04, THE OPTIONS TO FLASH DRIVES CONNECTED TO THESE ADAPTERS HAS BEEN REMOVED.

DETAIL:
Prior to going onsite, download the following diskette images (keep for future use to implement this ECA):

"PC Server and Netfinity server 4.5GB - 9.1GB Hard Drive Update Diskette V1.04"
(a bootable diskette that contains the Microcode Update Utility for all Adapters listed in this document).

"IBM ServeRAID and IBM ServeRAID II Supplemental Diskette version 2.41" or later (a non-bootable diskette containing the Network Operating System-specific IPSSEND utilities for use with all ServeRAID II Adapters / Controllers). These Diskette images may be downloaded from the following URL:
http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/files.html

- Select "Search"
- Type "9.1GB" or "ServeRAID Supplemental" to locate each of the above diskette images.
- Select the file (by the above description(s) to download.
- These are self-extracting executable files that prompt for one diskette each.

Note: It is recommended that the readme file is printed out for reference when using these diskettes.

********************* IMPORTANT ********************************
PRIOR to updating the Microcode on any hard drives attached to a ServeRAID II Adapter or Onboard ServeRAID II Controller, check if Autosynch is running. DO NOT apply the Microcode update if Autosynch is running, wait for Autosynch to complete prior to applying the Microcode. Use EITHER of the following procedures to determine the state of Autosynch on a ServeRAID II Adapter or Onboard ServeRAID II Controller:

With the Server up and running:

1- Place the "IBM ServeRAID and IBM ServeRAID II Supplemental Diskette version 2.41" or later in the floppy drive (drive A:)

2- From a Operating System Command prompt, go to the directory in drive A: (relative to Operating System) and type the following command line:
IPSSEND GETSTATUS X (then press <enter>)
(where X is the Adapter number, example: 1,2,3, or 4)

This will result with the following information displayed:

"Current / Most Recent Operation : = xxxxxxxxx
"Status" : = xxxxxxxxx

Example of Autosynch running:

"Current / Most Recent Operation : = Synchronize
"Status" : = In Progress

Example of Autosynch completed:

"Current / Most Recent Operation : = Synchronize
"Status" : = Completed

Note: The status displayed is that when the IPSSEND command was issued. The command may need to be re-issued to see any status changes.

DO NOT Start the Microcode Update until the Synchronize Operation is completed.

---------------------- OR ---------------------------------

With the Server down and Powered-Off:

The Microcode Update Utility will automatically check to see if the Autosynch is running. If it is running, it will return a message indicating Autosynch is running and to run the Update after it has completed. To run this Utility, proceed to the next section.

Note:
DO NOT Start the Microcode Update until the Synchronize Operation is completed.

****************************************************************

UPDATING THE MICROCODE ON THE HARD DRIVES:

The Microcode update is executed from the "PC Server and Netfinity server 4.5GB - 9.1GB Hard Drive Update Diskette V1.04".
This diskette is bootable. Upon boot, it will prompt for the user to select from a list of SCSI adapters to load the respective driver (see the "Utility Menu selection #" column in the Adapter / Controller List for proper Adapter selection). When the driver loads, the Adapter / Controller will initialize and then the utility will search for the SCSI hard drives specific to this ECA. If found, the drive(s) Firmware will be flashed to a new Microcode level (level 64) which fixes the Read error / DDD status issue.

NOTE: DO NOT power off the PC Server / Netfinity server or any attached type 3517, 3518, 3519, 3520 enclosure while the Update Utility is running.

NOTE: If there are multiple SCSI adapters in the system that are identical, it will not be necessary to run the update utility for each adapter.

NOTE: If there are multiple SCSI adapters of different types, then the Update Utility needs to be executed more than one time since the correct driver must be selected at boot time. The adapters are different and will respond to their respective drivers.

NOTES:
This ECA is MANDATORY.

This ECA will expire on January 1, 2003.

IBM/TSS CE's should record all time to Service Code 33, ECA022, other office 990.
