TP General - Using Hibernation with different hard drive partitioning schemes

Applicable to: World-Wide

Hibernation is only supported on ThinkPads when the hibernation file is created in a hard drive partition formatted as FAT16, FAT32 or HPFS.
If the entire hard drive is unpartitioned or formatted as NTFS, hibernation is not supported. However, if you have a FAT16 partition along with a NTFS partition, then the hibernation file can be created on the FAT16 partition (if it is large enough in size).

When installing an operating system or installing additional computer memory, you must create a hibernation file on the hard disk drive to use hibernation mode. You need to create the hibernation file only once after installing an operating system or additional memory. The size of the hibernation file will be approximately 1MB greater than total memory. For example, if you have 32MB of memory installed, the hibernation file will be 33MB.

To enable/disable hibernation from a command prompt do the following:
1. Make sure that the PS2.EXE program is installed on the hard drive.
(The PS2.EXE program can be installed by running UINSTALL from the Utility Diskette for DOS and Personalization)
2. To enable Hibernation from a command prompt type PS2 HFILE C .......(C is the drive where you want the hibernation file to reside)
2. To disable hibernation type PS2 HFILE DEL

To enable/disable hibernation from Windows 95/98
1. Start the ThinkPad Configuration program.
2. Click on Power Management Icon.
3. Click on Hibernation.
4. Click on the "Enable Hibernation" button or "Disable Hibernation" button depending on what you want to do.
5. Click on OK.
