9546 New main battery will not charge.

PURPOSE:
Correct dead on arrival (DOA) main Li-ion battery condition occurring with FRU P/N29H9232.

PHYSICAL CHECK:
The following conditions must be met before replacing the main battery:

1. The battery had never been charged (new system or option.)

AND

2. After an initial charge of 90 minutes the battery ICON is still missing from the system LED.

PREREQUISITES: NONE

COMPANION: NONE

CONCURRENT: NONE

DETAIL:
Lithium Ion (Li-ion) battery packs FRU P/N29H9232 that have not been previously charged may contain a cell with a condition that prevents charging. Batteries in this state will not display a battery ICON in the system LCD area when an AC Adapter is attached.

Prior to replacing the battery, customers should connect the AC adapter and charge the battery for 90 minutes. The system will attempt a trickle charge until the battery voltage is high enough to start a full current charge. If the battery starts a full current charge the battery ICON will appear (it may flash at first.) When the ICON stops flashing a percent of charge will show next to the battery ICON.

Batteries that reach this state will not be adversely effected and will achieve their full charge life potential.

All present battery FRU and Option stock has been screened for this condition.

If the battery ICON does not appear after a 90 minute charge, a US customer can contact the IBM PSG Help Center at 1-800-772-2227, customers in Canada can call IBM's HelpPC at 1-800-565-3344. The Help Center will arrange for a new battery to be sent to them.

NOTE:
Batteries that meet the above condition can also be installed using this ECA. Customers with a standard carry in warranty or with systems beyond the warranty period can mail or carry the system to an IBM authorized servicer for ECA installation. Only customers with an onsite warranty up-grade or onsite maintenance contract may have the ECA applied on-site.

NOTES:
This ECA will expire on June 30, 1999. Order all FRU parts locally, and record Time and Material to service code 33, ECA 008, and OTHER OFFICE 990.
