TP 385XD - Considerations for OS/2 Warp

Applicable to: World-Wide

Considerations for OS/2 Warp
These considerations are for the 385XD that came preloaded with Windows 98 and you are going to be installing OS/2 Warp. These considerations are applicable only to the countries residing in EMEA. At the bottom of the document is a list of considerations that apply world-wide.

o Suspend/resume operation may cause a sound distortion while playing back a AVI file by the MediaPlayer under a WinOS/2 session. A SYS3175 error happen intermittently. If this problem happens, exit the WinOS/2 session and restart it. Do not do a suspend/resume operation while playing back a AVI file by the MediaPlayer under a WinOS/2 sesion.

o Green noise appears when you play back MS Video-1 format with MediaPlayer under WinOS/2 full screen with 64 K color.

o In 256 color display mode, some video files may not be shown correctly using "Digital Video" applet. Use 64 K color or 16 M color mode.

o In OS/2, hibernation is not supported when the drive is formatted in HPFS on a system that has more than 64 MB of memory.

o If the COM port does not work properly, do the following:
1. Go to System Setup.
2. Select Hardware Manager.
3. Select Folder from the menu item.
4. Select Properties.
5. Under the default pulldown menu, select "NO HARDWARE DETECTION" (or change the setting if "NO HARDWARE DETECTION" is already selected).
6. Go to ThinkPad Configuration.
7. Set up COM port as you want.
8. Reboot the system.

o OS/2 Warp Version 4 FixPack XR_M004 fixes the following problems. If you experience one of those problems, apply OS/2 Warp Version 4 FixPack XR_M004, or later.
- APM.SYS in OS/2 Warp 4 does not issue resume notifications upon suspend/resume events on the second time and after. Typical symptoms are:
1. The system does not resume upon ring indicator after second incoming call.
2. Audio playback does not work after second resume event.

- OS/2 Warp Version 4 boot fails very intermittently.

- When OS/2 Warp Version 4 is installed, the following error message appears intermittently and the installation may fail. "MOUSE$ is not functioning".

- OS/2 Warp Version 4 boot takes very long on the Pentium with MMX technology system (CPU speed is 150 MHz, or faster) and the hard disk is formatted with FAT.

- Unnecessary suspend failure message appears on the screen upon system resume.

o When installing OS/2 Warp into the hard disk with more than 4.3 GB capacity, use the installation diskette update in ThinkPad Diskette Factory.

o OS/2 Warp Version 4 has the following restrictions. Refer to corresponding APAR numbers for more detail.
- IBM PCMCIA Infrared Wireless LAN Adapter is not recognized when it is used with Adaptec SCSI device driver AHA152X.ADD.

- When a music CD is played and "digital transfer" option is selected, main volume control does not work properly.

- In "Digital Audio" applet, unsupported record format like 4-bit ADPCM can be selected. When audio data is recorded with unsupported format, the data becomes unusable.

- "Digital Audio" applet does not show correct position locator when MIDI files are played.

- If you do not follow the instructions of Crystal Semi audio driver installation, reinstallation of OS/2 Warp Version 4 may be required.

- When you maximize the H/W volume while playing MIDI files, you may hear a noise. In this case, decrease the H/W volume and increase instead S/W volume control of the MIDI applet or of Digital Audio applet.

o On OS/2 Warp Version 4, when an FDD is formatted, the following error message appears upon the first access to the FDD. After second access, it does not occur. "5908: An error has occurred and the message is not accessible. Contact the supplier of the application." The same error happens when PCMCIA hard disks are formatted. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp.

o IBM Auto 16/4 Credit Card Token-Ring Adapters may fail to connect to the network intermittently with IBMTOKCS.OS2 driver in OS/2 Warp Version 4. If you experience this problem, get IBMTOKCS.OS2 Version 2.054 (or later) driver from the Internet at: http://www.raleigh.ibm.com/nes/neshome.html

o Welcome screen and Tutorial are restricted in 640 x 480 x 16 M color on OS/2.

o Use boot manager when booting OS/2 Warp from a secondary drive, such as the PCMCIA Type III drive.

o When booting up OS/2 Warp 4, a system problem may occur when displaying OS/2 Welcome message and Tutorial when there is 640 x 480 resolution with 16 M color setting.

The following two considerations apply to all geographies:
o CardBus PC Cards are not supported in the system.

o ZV Card is not supported under OS/2.

o The OS/2 Desktop screen position incorrectly shifts after the following procedure: 1) The virtual screen is enabled, 2) a Win-OS/2 full screen session is opened, and 3) you switch from the LCD (with virtual screen enabled) to and external monitor (Fn+F7). To correct this symptom, please switch to the OS/2 Desktop screen, change the Win-OS/2 full screen session to a Win-OS/2 window session, and then switch to the external monitor.

o When opening AmiPro without a printer setting under a Win-OS/2 seamless session using 16M colors you get GPF errors. To correct this symptom, set a Win-OS/2 printer driver and then open the AmiPro application again.
