Aptiva - How to view, update, and save text files using Edit or E
Applicable to: World-Wide
The steps outlined below are common to OS/2, DOS, and Windows 95. The only significant difference between the three environments is whether the editing tool is named E or Edit. E is used in IBM PC-DOS and OS/2. Edit is used in MS-DOS and in Windows 95. If you attempt to use one editing program (E or Edit) and receive a "Bad Command or filename" error message, try using the other.
In the following steps, substitute E for Edit in a PC-DOS or OS/2 environment:
1. In Windows 95 open a DOS window, in OS/2 open an OS/2 window, or in DOS go to the DOS prompt.
2. Change to the appropriate drive letter or directory which contains the text file to be edited.
3. At the command prompt type: "edit filename"(Windows 95 ),or " E filename", where filename is the name of the file you wish to edit, and press Enter.
4. With the text file contents displayed, you can make editing changes with the mouse and keyboard.
5. When finished editing:
in DOS press the F4 key to save the file and exit the E or Edit program
in OS/2 or Windows 95 click on File and then select Save (or Save As), and choose Exit to close the E or Edit program.
