Netfinity 7000 - SCSI Drives

Applicable to: World-Wide

Some drives have a special design called small computer system interface, or SCSI. This design allows you to attach multiple drives to a single SCSI connector.

Note
Any information about SCSI drives also applies to other SCSI devices, such as scanners and printers.

A 16-bit (wide) SCSI cable connects each hot-swap backplane to an integrated SCSI controller on the system board. An additional 16-bit 4-drop SCSI cable is shipped (disconnected) in the bottom of the server between the open bays and the power supply area. It is folded and restrained with a cable clamp.

If you want to install SCSI devices in the left front bays, you can do one of following:

Use one of the SCSI controllers on the system board to control the SCSI devices in the left front bays. In order to do this, you will need to disconnect the SCSI cable that controls one of the backplanes and install the additional 4-drop SCSI cable that is shipped (disconnected) inside the server. If you disconnect the SCSI cable from the backplane, you cannot install hot-swap drives in any of the bays supported by that backplane and, thus, can have a maximum of six hot-swap drives installed in the server. The 4-drop SCSI cable can then be used to support the SCSI devices in the left front bays.

Attach the 4-drop SCSI cable to one of the SCSI controllers on the system board and use that controller to control the SCSI devices in the left front bays. Install an optional SCSI adapter and use the SCSI controller on the adapter to control one of the SCSI hot-swap backplanes.

Note:
For ease of cabling, if you install an optional SCSI adapter to control a SCSI hot-swap backplane, install it in PCI slot 1. Refer to Cabling Example for the ServeRAID Adapter on page 63 for more information.

Install optional repeater adapters on the backplanes and daisy chain the backplanes, so they can be controlled by one of the SCSI controllers on the system board. You can then install the extra 4-drop SCSI cable and use the other SCSI controller on the system board to support the SCSI devices in the left front bays.
