TP 760EL/ELD/E/ED - Installing OS/2 Warp 4

Applicable to: World-Wide

Installing OS/2 Warp v4 on a ThinkPad 760EL/ELD
When installing OS/2 Warp on the IBM ThinkPad 760EL notebook computers, the installation routine will stop at the OS/2 logo screen and does not move beyond this point (at diskette 1 stage). This is because the ESS AudioDrive feature in the computer uses the I/O address 330h (for the MIDI port), where a Sony CD-ROM device driver in the OS/2 Warp diskette 1 accesses to detect if the following CD-ROM is attached to the computer:

Sony CDU-31A, CDU-7305, CDU-33A, or CDU-7405

To avoid the installation stop, do one of the following depending on your situation:

*If you are using one of these Sony CD-ROM drives, refer to the chapter describing the special hardware considerations in "Special Hardware Considerations" in the User's Guide to OS/2 Warp and read the parameter information for the SONY31A.ADD device driver.

*After that, you might need to disable the ESS audio, or change the ESS audio system resource to avoid any resource conflicts. In that case, start the ThinkPad Features program and register the Sony CD-ROM's resource information. Then set the appropriate resources for the ESS audio in the ThinkPad Features program.

*If you are not using these Sony CD-ROM drives, do the following:

1. Make a backup copy of the OS/2 Warp diskette 1.
2. Open the CONFIG.SYS file in the backup copy diskette using a text editor, and comment out the Sony device driver line as follows :
rem BASEDEV=SONY31A.ADD
3. Save the new version of the CONFIG.SYS file, and delete the file SONY31A.ADD from the backup copy diskette.
4. Now install OS/2 Warp using the backup copy of OS/2 Warp diskette 1 you just created.

Installing OS/2 Warp v4 on IBM ThinkPad 760ED
When installing OS/2 Warp v4 on an IBM ThinkPad 760E/ED notebook computer, users should be aware that once they have achieved a basic installation, that they will have to install the appropriate video driver, MWave DSP drivers, MWave Audio drivers, and Enhanced Video/MPEG playback drivers to get full support from their IBM ThinkPad notebook. To do this follow the procedure below :
1. Insert OS/2 CD-ROM into CDROM drive
2. Insert the OS/2 v4 Installation diskette into diskette drive
3. Reboot the system
4. The installation takes you through the installation disk, disk 1, and disk 2. On disk 2 you come to a blue "Welcome" screen, press enter after reading the information screen.
5. After a short period of time you are presented with the "Installing OS/2 Warp 4" screen, you have two choices :

The installation will continue and the system will reboot, upon reboot OS/2 Warp v4 sets up the applications and templates, this takes about 5 - 10 minutes.
16. After this a message will appear on the screen indicating that the OS/2 installation is complete, the system will then shut down and reboot itself, and load the OS/2 desktop to finally complete the basic installation of OS/2 Warp v4.

Setting up External Floppy Drive Access
Having setup OS/2 Warp v4 on the IBM ThinkPad notebook computers, if the notebook computer has an internal CD-ROM drive and the diskette drive is attached externally, then users should be aware that the external diskette drive will default to drive B: and not to drive A:, thus may cause some confusion when copying/reading files from diskette (as a message saying drive not responding will be displayed by OS/2 Warp v4).

To remedy this problem, boot OS/2 Warp v4, open an OS/2 Window and edit the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file. Findand locate the statement referencing the IBM Floppy disk device driver ie. IBM1FLPY.ADD. Modify this statement from:
BASEDEV=IBM1FLPY.ADD /A:0 /FORCE:2 /U:0 /F:1.44MB /U:1 /F:1.44MB
To read :
BASEDEV=IBM1FLPY.ADD /A:0 /FORCE:1 /U:0 /F:1.44MB /U:1 /F:1.44MB
Save the CONFIG.SYS file and then shutdown and reboot the system for the changes to take effect.

Advanced Setup of OS/2 Warp v4

Creating Driver Disk Images
Once you have the basic OS/2 Operating system loaded onto the hard disk of the IBM ThinkPad computer, the next stage is to install the correct video drivers, enhanced video and MPEG playback drivers, MWave DSP and Audio drivers, and IBM ThinkPad utilities. To do this you need the Device Driver PAK CD. Follow the instructions below for the quickest method to setting up these features:
1. Insert the Device Driver PAK CD into the CD-ROM
2. Open an OS/2 window
3. Type MKDIR IMAGES <enter>
4. To copy the appropriate zipped and compressed images of the device drivers straight to the hard disk from the CD-ROM, type the following :
COPY E:\DRIVERS\VFTPKOS2.EXE C:\IMAGES\*.*
COPY E:\DRIVERS\TPW4_G2.EXE C:\IMAGES\*.*
Alternatively, you can use the method suggested on the Device Driver PAK CD and install the WebExplorer to locate the files. It is suggested that you don't bother with this until after you have finished setting up your IBM ThinkPad with the features necessary

Installing Video Features
The first step is to setup the video features for the IBM ThinkPad 760, to do this you must create a diskette image of the video features. Open an OS/2 Window, and from within the C:\IMAGES directory, type VFTPGOS2 <enter>. Follow the instructions upon the screen and insert a blank diskette into the diskette drive to create the diskette image. Once the diskette image is built, type A:INSTALL <enter>, after a short while the installation process will have completed and you will returned to the command prompt.

Creating MWave, Enhanced Video, & ThinkPad Utilities
The next stage is to create the images for the Enhanced Video/MPEG playback, MWave DSP & Audio, and IBM ThinkPad Utilities. These images are created by running the TPW4_G2.EXE file which you copied into the C:\IMAGES directory. To create the images, type TPW4_G2 <enter> from within the C:\IMAGES directory and the following diskette images will be created :

LOADDSKF.EXE<=== Utility to build .DSK diskettes
M78H6681.DSK<=== ThinkPad Utility disk 1
M78H6683.DSK<=== ThinkPad Utility disk 2
M78H6678.DSK<=== ThinkPad Utility disk 3
760EDMPG.ZIP<=== ThinkPad 760 MPEG Features/Playback disk
760EDTRI.ZIP <=== ThinkPad 760 Enhanced Video/Playback disk
MWAVE_TP.ZIP<=== MWave for IBM ThinkPad 760
MWTP_WIN.ZIP<=== Win/OS/2 MWave support

Create the following directories from within the C:\IMAGES directory, to do this type the following :

MKDIR VIDEO
MKDIR UTILS
MKDIR ENH-VID
MKDIR MPEG-VID
MKDIR MWAVE

Now copy the un-pack utility PKUNZIP2 over to the images directory by typing the following:

COPY C:\IBMCOM\PKUNZIP2.EXE C:\IMAGES\*.* <enter>

Copy the file images created above into the appropriate directory by typing the following commands :

*ThinkPad Utilities
COPY C:\IMAGES\M78*.DSK C:\IMAGES\UTILS\*.* <enter>
COPY C:\IMAGES\LOADDSKF.EXE C:\IMAGES\UTILS\*.* <enter>

*ThinkPad Enhanced Video
COPY C:\IMAGES\760EDTRI.ZIP C:\IMAGES\ENH-VID\*.* <enter>
COPY C:\IMAGES\PKUNZIP2.EXE C:\IMAGES\ENH-VID\*.* <enter>

*ThinkPad MPEG
COPY C:\IMAGES\760EDMPG.ZIP C:\IMAGES\MPEG-VID\*.* <enter>
COPY C:\IMAGES\PKUNZIP2.EXE C:\IMAGES\MPEG-VID\*.* <enter>

*ThinkPad MWave
COPY C:\IMAGES\MW*.ZIP C:\IMAGES\MWAVE\*.* <enter>
COPY C:\IMAGES\PKUNZIP2.EXE C:\IMAGES\MWAVE\*.* <enter>

Installing ThinkPad Features
To ensure that you have access to the ThinkPad resources such as IRQ's, DMA's, I/O addresses, power management etc, you will need to install ThinkPad Features. To do this you need to create 3 diskette images. This can be done from within C:\IMAGES\UTILS directory. To do this type the following :
CD IMAGES <enter>
CD UTILS <enter>
LOADDSKF M78H6681.DSK A: /F <enter>
LOADDSKF M78H6683.DSK A: /F <enter>
LOADDSKF M78H6678.DSK A: /F <enter>

Once you have created the diskettes, insert the first diskette again and type A:\INSTALL2 <enter>, and follow the instructions on the screen to install the ThinkPad Features & Utilities.

Installing Enhanced Video
Enhanced Video support allows you to select resolutions from 640 * 480 * 256 colours right up to 1280 * 1024 resolutions. The Enhanced Video support is necessary for MPEG playback for video acceleration and therefore needs to be installed. To install the enhanced video type the following :
CD IMAGES <enter>
CD ENH-VID <enter>
PKUNZIP2 760EDTRI <enter>

By unpacking the 760EDTRI file, a message is display advising that you should read the readme file before proceeding, after having read the readme file you need to unpack yet another .ZIP file to create the enhanced video drivers, to do this type :

PKUNZIP2 760EDDSP

Once this has unpacked, a number of driver files are created on the hard disk, to setup the enhanced video support, type the following from within the C:\IMAGES\ENH-VID directory:

INSTALL <enter>

Once the driver installation is complete you will need to shut the system down and then reboot the system, upon doing so the correct display drivers for the system will be invoked once the Operating System has loaded.

Installing MPEG-1 Playback
IBM OS/2 Warp v4 comes with support for MPEG-1 playback. However, to use the IBM ThinkPad MPEG playback facility you will need to install MPEG-1 playback support for OS/2. To do this you need to un-pack the 760EDMPG file which is held in the C:\IMAGES\MPEG-VID directory. To do this type the following :

CD IMAGES <enter>
CD MPEG-VID <enter>
PKUNZIP2 760EDMPG <enter>

By unpacking the 760EDMPG file, a message is displayed advising that you should read the readme file before proceeding, after having read the readme file you need to unpack yet another .ZIP file to create the MPEG playback video drivers, to do this type :

PKUNZIP2 TRIMPEG <enter>

Once this has unpacked a number of driver files are created on the hard disk, to setup and install the MPEG playback feature, type :

MINSTALL <enter>

This will start the IBM MultiMedia presentation manager installation, you will need to select:

Trident Video Capture
ThinkPad MPEG Features

Follow the instruction on the screen, once the installation is complete you will need to shutdown the system and reboot.

To run an MPEG-1 file, insert the MPEG-1 CD into the CD-ROM drive or copy the MPEG-1 image onto the hard disk, open the Programs folder (which is n the OS/2 desktop), open the MultiMedia folder, and click on the Digital Video icon. Then insert the location/source of the MPEG-1 file.

Installing MWave DSP Support
To utilise the MWave DSP feature of the IBM ThinkPad and be able to hear sounds, send faxes, and connect using the internal modem, you need to install MWave DSP support for OS/2. Again the images are provided on the Device Driver PAK CD which you should have copied into the C:\IMAGES\MWAVE directory earlier. To create the MWave support diskettes you first need to unpack the following files from within the C:\IMAGES\MWAVE directory, type the following:

PKUNZIP2 MWAVE_TP.ZIP <enter>
PKUNZIP2 MWTP_WIN.ZIP <enter>

By unpacking the MWAVE_TP.ZIP file, a message is displayed advising the user to read the license documentation before proceeding in the readme file. Once you have done this, the following 3 .ZIP files will have been created :

OS2VSD.ZIP
OS2-1.ZIP
OS2-2.ZIP

To create diskette images with the appropriate drivers on, first format 3 diskettes to ensure they are completely blank. The next stage is to create the 3 MWave diskettes, to do this type the following :
1. Insert a diskette into the diskette drive
2. From the C:\IMAGES\MWAVE directory, type :
PKUNZIP2 OS2-1.ZIP A: -D <enter>
Label this diskette MWave Diskette 1 for OS/2
3. Insert another blank diskette into the diskette drive
4. From the C:\IMAGES\MWAVE directory, type :
PKUNZIP2 OS2-2.ZIP A: -D <enter>
Label this diskette MWave Diskette 2 for OS/2
5. Insert another blank diskette into the diskette drive
6. From the C:\IMAGES\MWAVE directory, type
PKUNZIP2 OS2VSD.ZIP A: -D <enter>
Label this diskette MWave VSD Diskette for OS/2

Once the diskette images have been created you are ready to install MWave DSP support, to do this do the following :

The first step is to install the System Management Device Driver, you MUST install this driver, this is found on the IBM ThinkPad Utility diskettes (diskette 1) which you created earlier. To install this driver do the following :
1. Open the OS/2 System folder
2. Open the System Setup folder
3. Open the Install/Remove folder
4. Click on the Device Driver Install icon
5. Insert the ThinkPad Utility diskette (diskette 1) and then click on the "Install" button. The "Select Device Drivers" window will then appear and should contain the ThinkPad System Management Device Driver, select this and then click on the OK button
6. After a few seconds the device driver will have been installed. Select the Exit button to exit the Device Driver installation.
7. You must now shut down the system and reboot for this driver to become active.

The next step to installing MWave DSP support is to install the MWave driver support, to do this follow the instructions below :
1. Open an OS/2 Window
2. Insert the first of the MWave for OS/2 diskettes into the diskette drive
3. Type A:SETUP <enter> , and then follow the instruction on the screen to complete the installation. Once the MWave installation is complete, remove the diskette from the diskette drive and shut down the system.
4. Upon reboot of OS/2 you will need to install the MWave Audio support, to do this insert the MWave for OS/2 VSD diskette into the diskette drive.
5. Open an Os/2 Window, and type A:SETUP <enter>. This will start the MultiMedia presentation manager and you must click on the Install button to install IBM MWave Audio.
6. Once the installation is complete you will need to shutdown the system and reboot.

Likely Problems & Errors
Keywords : SYS1201 on C:\MMOS2\VIDVCI.SYS
If during the installation of OS/2 Warp v4 you select IBM Video Capture device within the MultiMedia part of the installation then you will encounter the following error when you boot OS/2:

SYS1201: The device driver C:\MMOS2\VIDVCI.SYS specified in the DEVICE statement on line 106 of the CONFIG.SYS file was not installed. Line 106 is ignored.
The reason for this is that this is not the correct device driver for the video capture feature which is found in the IBM ThinkPad 760 notebooks. To remedy the problem remove this statement from the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file. To setup the video capture and playback follow the instructions for installing Enhanced Video and MPEG playback support.
