Aptiva - Stingray Adapter (Mwave) Card Information

The Stingray Adapter is a bus master adapter which occupies an ISA/AT slot in IBM-compatible PCs with a 386SX or later compatible processor. It supports up to a 16-bit data path with 24-bit addressing. Interrupt sharing with other Mwave adapters is also supported.

This reference adapter supports both the IBM38MDSP2780 (MDSP2780) and IBM38 2780PRO (2780PRO) Digital Signal Processors providing Plug-and-Play for Windows 95 environments.

Using the MDSP2780 and 2780PRO, the Stingray Adapter provides multimedia functions including audio input/output, musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) port, telephony, and industry-standard games support.

The Stingray Adapter contains:
- The MDSP2780 and 2780PRO digital subsystem, which provides most of the interface functions to the host PC system, including:

- Processor speeds up to 30 MIPS, depending on processor and RAM speed selected
- Support for Plug-and-Play in Windows 95 environment
- Standard industry games hardware register support and interface
- Jumperless configuration
- 32Ká24 instruction SRAM memory
- 32Ká16 data SRAM memory
- MIDI serial port and MIDI interface support logic
- Support for two joysticks

- Digital to analog circuitry

- Analog to digital circuitry

- An analog subsystem that includes:

- Telephony circuitry
- Support for two internal CDROM audio inputs
- Support for 2 auxiliary line inputs
- Stereo line input
- Stereo line output (with the capability to drive headphones)
- Extensive input/output mixing and gain control
- Support for monophonic microphone input and amplifier
- Support for electret or dynamic style microphones
- Attachment to telephone lines
- Local telephone handset capability
- An audio expansion connector

Audio Functions

The Stingray Adapter provides the following audio features:
- Stereo line input providing CD quality recording
- Microphone input with gain control for dynamic or electret microphones
- Phantom power support for electret microphones
- Stereo line output with CD quality fidelity
- Internal connector for internal CD-ROM audio and a CD-ROM player controller
- Extensive switching and mixing capabilities for audio inputs and outputs
- An interface to a telephone handset for voice input and output
- An internal Berg connector that can be used to route audio signals to and from a PC front panel assembly or a PC system

Through the use of the audio hardware and DSP software, various levels of audio recording and playback performance can be achieved.

MIDI

The Stingray Adapter MIDI implementation provides the basic hardware needed to support one IN port and one OUT port. When coupled with the Mwave System software, this implementation supports the MPU-401 standard where the hardware transmits and receives bytes and generates interrupts but does not perform any further processing of the MIDI protocols. The Stingray Adapter MIDI port also supports music synthesizer applications.
In addition, the MDSP2780 and 2780PRO supports the MIDI THRU port; however, this port is not provided on the Stingray Adapter.

Telephony Functions

The Stingray Adapter, with the associated Stingray Adapter Reference Design software, provides the following telephony features:
- Interface to local handset for private listening and recording of phone messages
- Industry-standard modem support up to 28.8 Kbit/s
- Industry-standard FAX support up to 14.4 Kbit/s
- Full-duplex speakerphone support
- Telephone answering machine support
- Provides a wake-up on ring indicator for PC system power-on

The Stingray Adapter, with appropriate DSP software, can be used to support voice applications which intercept and answer incoming telephone calls, and store messages on fixed disk. The Stingray Adapter audio output can also be used with a microphone to provide the service of a speaker phone, without using the telephone handset. Call progress tones can also be heard through the telephone handset, stereo headphones, or audio output channels, as selected under program control.

The MDSP2780 and 2780PRO subsystem telephony interface, along with the proper DSP code, can provide the following features:
- Modem
- Standard asynchronous COM port interface (NS16550A UART compatible) operation
- ITU-TV.34 28.8 Kbps (default setting)
- ITU-TV.32bis/14.4 Kbps
- Bell-103/212A,ITU-TV.21/V.22, v.22bis protocols with data rates from 50 to 2400 bps
- ITU-TV.32 protocols with data rates of 4800, 9600 uncoded, and 9600 bps Trellis coded
- Hayes AT command set compatibility
- Call progress monitor
- Autodial
- DTMF and pulse dialing
- Asynchronous error recovery protocol
- Error correction via Microcom Network Protocol (MNP**) classes 1-4 Data compression via MNP class 5 and V.42bis MNP class 5 for up to 2x data compression

- Telephony API (TAPI) supported via Windows/95 unimodem on COM port
- Windows media control interface (MCI) FAX application interface uses a DMA, instead of a COM port, to reduce PC interrupt load

Class 2 FAX Modem

- Automatically answering the phone and responding with a prerecorded message

- Playing back messages left by callers to speakers or to local handset
- Recording greeting via the phone set or microphone

Diagnostics Software and Testing

A diagnostics utility has been written to analyze the Stingray Adapter during manufacturing. The diagnostic program has the following features:
- Ability to control a hot-pluggable riser card á
- Provides error numbers if a fault is detected á
- Provides a list of probable faulty components and a list of the error numbers

Documentation for the diagnostics utility is provided in the form of a README file on the diskette with the utility. See this README for error numbers and current information about the utility.

Hardware Functional Testbed

Software support is provided to control an external testing box so that the telephone lines can be adequately tested. This testing box is controlled by the riser card and diagnostic software.

Additional external test equipment, such as a total harmonic distortion and noise (THD+N) audio analyzer, may be required for best testing results.

Stingray Adapter Functional Tests

This section includes functional tests to be performed during the initial bring-up of the Stingray Adapter and performance tests for components of the Stingray Adapter.

Initial Bring-Up Tests

Release-level tools and utilities to aid with initial adapter bring-up are being developed but are not yet generally available. For information about the availability of these tools, see the Mwave forum on the Mwave BBS. Contact your IBM Microelectronics Marketing Representative for access to the BBS.

Function Concurrency

Concurrency means running more than one function on the DSP at the same time. For example, connecting at 28.8kbps with the modem, while using the CD-Audio function and using the Wave-Audio function.
