TP General - How to Configure Serial Devices, IR, Serial and MWave Modem

Applicable to: United States, Canada

This document contains information on three configurations for the InfraRed, Serial Port and MWave Modem on a ThinkPad system.

Note: Depending on your system 755 Series or 760 you will use either TP Setup (755's or TP Features (760's These instructions will reflect which icon's within each you need to use. Not all models have MWave or InfraRed.

InfraRed Port COM1 Serial Port Disabled, and MWave at COM2
1. Click on the "InfraRed" Icon, Click on "Enable", verify that the port is set to "Both", and Power is "ON".
2. Click on "Advanced". Ensure the COM port is set to "COM1" and IRQ is "4" Standard settings for I/O Is 1A0. (Note: If the you receive a message telling you another device is you are selecting is using the same resources as another. Click on "OK" and that device will be disabled.)
3. Click "OK", then Click on "Modem", then "Enable" and "COM2".
4. Click on "OK".
5. If running Windows 95, perform the following steps, otherwise shutdown computer and cold boot.
6. Click on "Start", then "Settings", and then "Control Panel".
7. Click on "Device Manager" tab and then scroll down to Ports COM & LPT.
8. Click on the "MWave Modem" and then on "Remove".
9. Click on the Other COM ports, "Communications Port" Or "Infrared" and remove them as well. Do not remove the LPT port. Do not allow the system reboot after the removal.
10. Shutdown windows completely, DO NOT RESTART. After the computer has been shutdown, power on the computer and verify that your settings are correct.

InfraRed Port Disabled, Serial Port COM1 and MWave at COM2
1. Click on the "Serial Port" Icon, Click on "Enable", verify that the port is set to "COM1". (Note: If the you receive a message telling you another device is you are selecting is using the same resources as another. Click on "OK" and that device will be disabled.)
2. Click "OK", then Click on "Modem", then "Enable" and "COM2".
3. Click on "OK".
4. Click on "Power Icon", then "Device Power", ensure that the Serial Port is powered.
5. If running Windows 95, perform the following steps, otherwise shutdown computer and cold boot.
6. Click on "Start", then "Settings", and then "Control Panel".
7. Click on "Device Manager" tab and then scroll down to Ports COM & LPT.
8. Click on the "MWave Modem" and then on "Remove".
9. Click on the Other COM ports, "Communications Port" Or "Infrared" and remove them as well. Do not remove the LPT port. Do not allow the system reboot after the removal.
10. Shutdown windows completely, DO NOT RESTART. After the computer has been shutdown, power on the computer and verify that your settings are correct.

InfraRed Port COM1 Serial Port COM2 and MWave Disabled:
1. Click on the "Serial Port" Icon, Click on "Enable", verify that the port is set to "COM2". (Note: If the you receive a message telling you another device is you are selecting is using the same resources as another. Click on "OK" and that device will be disabled.)
2. Click on the "InfraRed" Icon, Click on "Enable", verify that the port is set to "Both", and Power is "ON".
3. Click on "Advanced". Ensure the COM port is set to "COM1" and IRQ is "4" Standard settings for I/O Is 1A0.
4. Click on "OK".
5. Click on "Power Icon", then "Device Power", ensure that the Serial Port is powered.
6. If running Windows 95, perform the following steps, otherwise shutdown computer and cold boot.
7. Click on "Start", then "Settings", and then "Control Panel".
8. Click on "Device Manager" tab and then scroll down to Ports COM & LPT.
9. Click on the "MWave Modem" and then on "Remove".
10. Click on the Other COM ports, "Communications Port" Or "Infrared" and remove them as well. Do not remove the LPT port. Do not allow the system reboot after the removal.
11. Click on "Modem", then Double click on "MWave 28.8 Modem" disable device usage in the properties box. Windows 95 - Take the check mark out of Device Usage, Windows 95 OSR2 put a check mark in the "Disable in the Configuration".)
12. Shutdown windows completely, DO NOT RESTART. After the computer has been shutdown, power on the computer and verify that your settings are correct.
