Aptiva - How to enable DOS audio support on systems equipped with Crystal Audio sound cards

Applicable to: United States

Aptiva systems equipped with Crystal Audio sound cards require that real mode device drivers for the card be loaded prior to using the sound card in MS-DOS. These drivers are typically loaded in the CONFIG.SYS and DOSSTART.BAT (this file is processed each time Windows is restarted in MS-DOS mode) files. The following procedure describes how to verify that the Crystal Audio drivers are being loaded properly from the files mentioned above. This document applies to all 2161 and 2162 models as well as the 2159-S80, 2159-S90, and the 2176-C6V.

Checking the CONFIG.SYS:
1. Click "Start", select "Run", type notepad c:\config.sys in the Run dialog box, and press "Enter".

2. The CONFIG.SYS file should contain the following line exactly as shown below:

device=c:\windows\cs4232c.exe /A

3. If the above line is missing or incorrect, modify the CONFIG.SYS file to include the line at the end of the file.

4. Close Notepad by clicking the "X" in the upper right-hand corner. If you made any changes to the file, you will be prompted to save them. Click "Yes" to accept the changes.

Checking the DOSSTART.BAT:
Note: The 2159-S80, 2159-S90, and 2176-C6V may not have the line listed below. In these cases, add the line to the DOSSTART.BAT file as described to ensure that the CS4232C.EXE program is being run. The program does not stay resident in memory, so there is no disadvantage to running the program twice.

1. Click "Start", select "Run", type notepad c:\windows\dosstart.bat in the Run dialog box, and press "Enter".

2. The DOSSTART.BAT file should contain the following line exactly as shown below:

c:\windows\cs4232c.exe /A

3. If the above line is missing or incorrect, modify the DOSSTART.BAT file to include the line at the end of the file.

4. Close Notepad by clicking the "X" in the upper right-hand corner. If you made any changes to the file, you will be prompted to save them. Click "Yes" to accept the changes.

Verifying that the Crystal Audio card is being initialized:
1. Make sure that the CONFIG.SYS and DOSSTART.BAT files have been modified as directed above. Click "Start", select "Shutdown", select "Restart in MS-DOS mode?", and then click "Yes".

2. The computer will restart in MS-DOS mode. You will see several text messages appear as the DOSSTART.BAT file is processed. You should see, depending on your system type, one of the following messages related to the Crystal Audio sound card:

For 2176-C6V, 2159-S80, and 2159-S90:

CrystalWare(tm) CS4232 Audio Initialization Utility, Version 1.51
Copyright(c) 1993-96 Crystal Semiconductor Corp. All Rights Reserved.
* Plug N Play BIOS Detected.
* SBpro: I/O = 220, IRQ = 5, DMA = 1.

For 2161 and 2162 systems:

CrystalWare(tm) CS4232 Audio Initialization Utility, Version 1.70
Copyright(c) 1993-96 Crystal Semiconductor Corp. All Rights Reserved.
* Plug N Play BIOS Detected.
* SBpro: I/O = 220, IRQ = 5, DMA = 1.
* Cannot load C:\WINDOWS\cwaudio.bin.
* Using default Firmware download.

3. If you see one of the above messages, then the Crystal Audio card initialization program is being run correctly, and the sound card is configured for DOS.
