Aptiva - What is the Aptiva Communication Center?

Applicable to: World-Wide

Aptiva Communication Center Brief Component Description:

Communication Center is a telephone (speakerphone), fax machine, and data launcher. It provides an attractive, easy-to-use, interface for telephone calls utilizing both speakerphone and handset. Incoming messages can be stored in the mailbox of the Telephone Answering Machine. Up to 10 mailboxes are supported and messages can be passed from one mailbox to another. Remote message retrieval is possible and password protection is invoked for security.

The telephone has many features. They include Music On Hold, muting the caller, recording a conversation, a flash button for conference calling or call waiting (user must have these enabled by their telephone company), re-dial, and speed dialing. Advanced features including call screening, Toll Saver, and a Do Not Disturb button. If you are playing a CD when a voice phone call is picked up, the CD will mute until the call is over.

The Fax Center is a fax machine that allows you to send and receive faxes, schedule faxes to be sent at a later time, and forward faxes to a predetermined number. Sending a fax can be accomplished through Quicknote or a formal text editor. The print driver is preset to the com port for faxing and to the printer port for printing a fax.

The Address Book is tied to both the telephone and Fax Center for quick look-up of names and numbers, as well as speed dialing. It holds 999 names and addresses.

A Data Launcher button provides quick access to either WinComm Lite in Windows 3.1 and OS/2 Warp or Hyperterminal in Windows 95.

Since Voice, Fax and Data discrimination is enabled, the Aptiva Communication Center can decide the type of incoming call and route the call to the appropriate voice, fax, or data window. These must all be open to receive the call. This is especially true for Wake Up On Ring.

What environment changes are caused when this component is enabled?
The Mwave Resource Allocation Dynamic allows only certain activities to coincide with the Aptiva Communication Center. Modem-related activities take place over audio; therefore, games and audio applications may be halted while the modem is in use. Faxes are possible with games and audio. 28.8Kbps data communications occupy almost the entire resource of the Mwave DSP and, therefore, almost all other applications using sound are locked out. The exception is simple .wav files; they can be played with a 28.8Kbps connection. The exception to this is the Mpeg and playing general MIDI, where a conflict may exist with phone calls.

Where are the icons located on the desktop?
For the Windows 3.1/Warp preload, the icons are located in the Aptiva Productivity group. For the Windows 95 preload, the icon is also located in the Aptiva Productivity group and under Start > Programs > Aptiva Productivity.

Where are the files on the image? The directory structure is as follows:

What operating changes occur?
1) Aptiva Fax appears in Printer Setup as an option

2) Aptiva Fax is an option under Windows 95 Program Accessories

What software must be loaded?
Mwave drivers, as well as the Phoenix software.

What hardware is required to run this application?
The Mwave drivers card is required to run this application. Runs well with 8MB of memory.

Here is a listing of the error codes generated by this application:
"Init_voice.dll Error" - Occurs when the Mwave modem is not responding to the application.

"Addreng.dll or Addrapp.exe Error" - Occurs if a problem occurs with the address book.

"814 Error" - Occurs when improperly importing a wav file for a greeting.

"104 Error" - Occurs when dialing a successive call too fast (must wait 3 seconds between calls).

"102 Error" - Occurs when importing a wav file for a greeting (and playing immediately).

Known software issues:
- Hold music plays on local speakers as well as on the phone line.

- On the leave memo screen, "Memo Notes" scratch pad is now referred to as the memo "Label".

- The number zero, "0", as the first character in a password is not acknowledged. Do not use zero as the leading character in a password. If, by chance, a password with a leading zero is entered, (for instance, 0111) you must locally enter 111 (because the leading zero is not recognized). Also, the number "3" should not be used as the first character when setting a mailbox password.

- When importing a .wav or .voi file as a greeting, it is necessary to exit the Aptiva Phone to replace with a personal greeting and avoid a possible error.

- When the "Tollsaver" option or the "Wait xx rings until pickup if new messages" entries are modified in the Operator Settings, it is recommended to exit Aptiva Communication Center and restart the application for the options to take effect.

- When using the Fax View option, please refer to the manual for proper instructions.

- If the speed dial box becomes disabled, just click on the "hang-up" button to activate.

- After a call has terminated, wait 2 seconds before placing the next call.

Voice prompt anomalies:
- You may have more than one old message even though prompts tell you "you have no more messages" while playing your old messages. Continue pressing "2" to cycle through old messages.

- You may have several new messages even though the prompt returns to "press 1 for new messages, 2 for old messages..." after playing the first new message. Continue to press "1" to cycle through all new messages.

- After pressing "2" to end Remote Greeting, press the pound key, "#", or silence detection will disconnect the phone.

Important Windows 95 issues and precautions:
- Aptiva Fax is accessible through either the Aptiva Productivity folder or the Aptiva Windows 95 Communication Center. Functions found under Fax in the Accessories folder apply only to Microsoft Fax options.

- Configure Microsoft Fax so that it DOES NOT auto answer (this is the default setting) and does not automatically receive faxes. The steps to set Microsoft Fax not to auto answer are:
1) From the Control Panel, open the Mail and Fax application.
2) In the Exchange Settings Properties screen, double-click on Microsoft Fax.
3) From Fax Modem screen, double-click Fax properties.
4) Choose "Don't Answer" in Answer Mode Dialog Box.
5) Save Settings.

- Do not run Windows 95 Remote Access before using Operator.
