Aptiva - How to determine if your video controller is DirectX compatible

As of March 1998, the most recent released version of Microsoft's DirectX is version 5.0. According to Microsoft Support Online:
"DirectX was designed to be compatible with all existing drivers, even those that do not contain DirectX acceleration features. Broken or damaged drivers aside, DirectX 5 is compatible with both non-DirectX drivers and drivers that were created for earlier versions of DirectX. Drivers created specifically for DirectX 5 will yield the highest performance."
"DirectX 5 was also designed to be fully backward compatible. Software that ran on earlier releases of DirectX will work on DirectX 5. We do extensive application testing to ensure this compatibility."

According to Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility List, the following video controllers used in IBM Aptiva computers use drivers designed to be compatible with DirectX 5:
ATI Technologies Rage/Rage II PCI (ati_m64)
ATI Technologies Rage/Rage II+ PCI (ati_m64)
Trident Microsystems 9680 PCI (v6.00.20)
Use the following procedure to identify the video controller:
1. Turn on the computer from a fully powered-off state.
2. When the memory count appears in the upper-left corner of the screen, press and hold the F1 key to activate the CMOS setup menu.
3. When the setup menu appears, select Video Information.
Video controllers that do not appear on the list above may still be usable with DirectX. Microsoft packages replacement video drivers for several video controllers with DirectX 5. DirectX 5 is available for download at http://www.microsoft.com/directx/resources/enddl.htm.
