PS/1 - Error Message: Speller Cannot Be Found

Applicable to: United States

If you have not deleted the ZIP files in your RECOVERY directory, use the procedure described in Part I of this article. If you have deleted the ZIP files, but have made recovery diskettes, then use the procedure in Part II.

PART I:

1. Exit Windows completely, and go to the DOS prompt.

2. Type: CD\RECOVERY (press Enter)

NOTE: THERE IS A SPACE BETWEEN THE HYPHEN AND THE CHARACTER PRECEDING THE HYPHEN IN THE PARAMETERS o AND d THROUGHOUT THIS PROCEDURE

NOTE: WHEN USING PKUNZIP, ALL CHARACTERS NEED TO BE LOWER CASE

3. Type: pkunzip -o -d *.zip msworks\*.* s:\ (press Enter). This will re-install all of the MS Works files

4. Type: pkunzip -o -d *.zip windows\msapps\*.* c:\ (press Enter).

This will re-install your MS Works Speller, Thesaurus, Clipart, etc..

Try your machine now before going any further. If your spell checker still won't work, then you'll have to perform the next step which will copy the original WIN.INI file that came with your machine and overwrite the one you have now. This will mean that you have to re-install any Windows programs that you loaded since purchasing your machine.

5. Type: pkunzip -o -d *.zip windows\win.ini c:\ (press Enter).

This will re-install the WIN.INI file that originally came with your machine.

- This will reinstall the entire MSWORKS directory to your system.

PART II:

If you have deleted the ZIP files, but have made recovery diskettes, then use the following procedure.

1. Exit windows completely and go to the DOS prompt.

2. Type: CD\RECOVERY (press Enter)

NOTE: THERE IS A SPACE BETWEEN THE HYPHEN AND THE CHARACTER PRECEDING THE HYPHEN IN THE PARAMETERS o AND d THROUGHOUT THIS PROCEDURE.

NOTE: WHEN USING PKUNZIP, ALL CHARACTERS NEED TO BE LOWER CASE

3. Put your first recovery diskette in drive A. During the following steps you will have to keep putting the diskettes in one at a time, until that step is completed. The next PKUNZIP step will require you to start all over with recovery diskette 1.

4. Type: pkunzip -o -d a\:*.zip msworks\*.* c:\ (press Enter). This will re-install all of your MS Works files.

5. Type: pkunzip -o -d a\:*.zip windows\msapps\*.* c:\ (press Enter). This will re-install your MS Works Speller, Thesaurus, Clipart, etc..

Try your machine now before going any further. If your spell checker, thesaurus, or MS Draw still won't work, then you'll have to perform the next step which will copy the original WIN.INI file that came with your machine and overwrite the one you have now. This will mean that you have to re-install the Windows programs that you loaded since you got your machine.

6. Type: pkunzip -o -d a:\*.zip windows\win.ini c;\ (press Enter). This will re-install your WIN.INI file that originally came with your machine.

This will reinstall your entire MSWORKS and WINDOWS\MSAPPS directories to your system.
