Aptiva - Insufficient Memory Error when running DEFRAG

Applicable to: United States

When attempting to run DEFRAG, you may encounter an "insufficient memory" error message that will prevent the optimization of your hard drive. While this may sometimes be alleviated or fixed by an increase in conventional memory, it is more often due to having a very large number of files in the directories of that hard drive.

When DEFRAG executes, it builds tables of all files and directories on the hard drive in memory and uses these tables during the optimization processing. If there are too many files on the drive, the memory space will be filled up, thus stopping any additional processing.

The number of files may vary, but it is usually on the order of 4000 to 5000 or more files on the drive. You can determine how many files are on your hard drive by going to a DOS prompt and entering the command:

DIR C:\*.* /S

The output from this command will list every directory and file on the hard drive, and this can be a very long list, depending on the number of files on the drive. The listing will also scroll very fast on the screen. When the list completes, the last few lines will provide you with the information about the total number of files found on that hard drive. If it is 4000 or more files, then it is likely that this is the cause of the insufficient memory messages.

To correct this condition, you should either copy some of your application directories and files to another drive or to diskettes, and then delete them from the hard drive. Continue doing this until you are below 4000 files, at which time you can then run DEFRAG again. This time, it should be successful in optimizing the drive.

Once the optimization has been completed, you can then copy the files back to the hard drive. Note that, when copying the files back, they will automatically be stored on the hard drive in an optimum manner and will not cause further defragmentation.
