This document contains installation instructions for Microsoft Windows NT on an IBM PC Server 520.

If you are very familiar with SCSI, hardware, and the installation process, continue with section 3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users. If not, go to section 4.0 Detailed installation instructions.
3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users
1. Create an array of the desired RAID level using the RAID Option Diskette (listed in section 2). Make a backup of your RAID configuration with the RAID Option diskette.
2. The boot device (RAID logical drive) for this controller type (IBM PCI F/W RAID Adapter) must be 500MB or less. Create an A0 RAID logical drive and another (A1) for the rest of the free space
3. Initialize and Synchronize both drives before beginning the NT install.
4. It is recommended that boot diskettes be created from the NT CD to use for the install (See note in detailed instructions).
5. Boot from the NT Diskettes. Specify the mass storage device using the RAID option diskette ONLY. Do not allow
autodetection of the mass storage device.
6. Create a only one single active partition on the A0 drive. The A1 drive can be partitioned as you wish.
7. If 500MB is large enough for your system root, direct NT install to the A0 RAID logical drive. If not, direct the NT install to the A1 RAID logical drive. NTFS and a default system root directory of \WINNT is recommended.
8. Do not use internal NT drivers for your Network Interface Card (NIC) or SCSI devices added after the install. Use OEM supplied or downloaded drivers for this purpose. Service Pack 3 is mandatory. See Appendix A for installation instructions. Create and Emergency Repair diskette during the installation.

4.0 Detailed instructions
Follow the instructions below in the order presented:
4.1 Setting up the hardware
Note: Follow the on screen directions on the following disk operations:
1. Boot to the BIOS upgrade diskette (listed in section 2) and flash the system to revision 16T3C.
2. Boot to the RAID BIOS/Firmware upgrade diskette (listed in section 2) and flash the controller.
4.2 Running the EISA configuration program
1. Boot up to the EISA config diskette. (diskette listed in section 2)
2. Type Y at Configure System now?.
3. Go to step 3, View or Edit Details.
4. Select Total System Memory.
5. Press Enter.
6. Select the correct memory size and hit F10.
7. Press F10.
8. Go to Step 2, Add and Remove Boards.
9. Press Insert.
10. Press Enter.
11. Select ISA SVGA Video Card and press Enter.
12. Press Enter.
13. Select Slot 1 and press Enter.
14. Select Step 5 to Save and Exit.
4.3 Setting up the array (IBM PCI F/W RAID controller only)
1. Ignore any errors in the configuration on the initial boot of the IBM PCI F/W RAID controller out of the box.
2. Boot to the RAID configuration utility diskette.
3. Select 2, Start RAID Configuration Program.
4. Select 3, Create Delete Array.
5. If an array is currently defined (any ONL drives to the right):
a. Select 3, Delete Disk Array
b. Follow the instructions at the bottom of the screen to delete it.
6. Select 4, Create Disk Array:
a. Make all drives you desire in the array ONL with the exception of Hot Spares.
7. Select 5, Define Logical Drive:
a. Select the RAID level desired.
b. DO NOT ACCEPT FREE SPACE Change the size to 500, following the directions at the bottom of the screen.
8. Repeat the above step, with the exception of accepting the free space
Note: The array A should now have a logical drive (A0) of 500MB and logical drive (A1) with the remainder.
9. Press Esc to return to the previous menu.
10. Select 4, Initialize/Synchronize array:
11. Select 2, Initialize Disk Array:
a. Highlight both A0 and A1 logical drives with the spacebar.
b. Start Initialization. Allow to complete.
12. Select 3, Synchronize Disk Array:
a. Highlight both A0 and A1 logical drives with the spacebar.
b. Start Synchronization. Allow to complete.
13. You are now ready for NOS installation.
Note: A RAID Configuration Backup Diskette is recommended when array configuration is complete. Refer to the RAID Option Diskette menu to create one.
Warning: The IBM PCI F/W controller does not autosynchronize. Perform manual sync from the RAID Option Diskette on a weekly basis.
4.4 Installing the NOS
Note: There is a known TechNet issue with some NT installs reporting Operating System Not Found or similar error message after rebooting the first time during the install. This is solved by creating new boot diskettes by running WINNT /OX from the i386 directory of the CD ROM on a DOS or Win 95 machine, or running WINNT32 /OX from the same directory on an NT machine to create new boot diskettes. Use these diskettes for the installation. The shrink wrap diskettes will work without problems intermittently (perhaps 2 out of 6 tries). Refer to MS Technet for details.
1. Boot from the NT boot diskettes and follow the directions until a screen appears that says:
NT is about to detect your mass storage device
Press S to Skip, then S to specify. Place the RAID Option Diskette (from section 2) in the drive. Select OEM Manufacturers Supplied Diskette. Accept IBM SCSI-2 F/W PCI or Micro Channel RAID Driver for NT 3.51 and 4.0.
2. Follow the on screen directions. When a screen appears with hardware information (Computer, Keyboard, etc.) select Above list matches my computer. Continue following the on screen directions.
3. When a screen appears showing unpartitioned space on 2 hard drives, ensure the 500MB partition is highlighted and press C. Accept the default size of 500 by pressing enter. Repeat the same steps for the other hard drive with the exception of accepting whatever free space it has. C: should now read New (unformatted) at 500MB and the same for D: with the exception of its different respective size.
4. If 500MB is large enough for your intended system root, highlight the C: partition and press enter. If not, highlight the D: partition and press enter. Allow setup to format the partitions (NTFS recommended).
5. Skip exhaustive examination of the drives by pressing Esc. Partitions will now be checked.
6. Follow the on screen directions to complete the file copy operation and allow the machine to reboot.
7. The machine should now boot to the graphical portion of the NT install. The installation should now follow the on screen instructions depending on whatever hardware you have installed.
Note: Use only downloaded drivers or those supplied with NIC cards. This also goes for SCSI devices added after install.
Note: Create an Emergency Repair diskette when prompted.
When NT is installed, Service Pack 3 is mandatory. Perform the following to install it:
Appendix A: Installing Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3
Note: You will need about 75 MB of free disk space to unpack the Service Pack.
1. Insert the ServerGuide FixPak CD that contains Windows NT Server 4.0 Service Pack 3 into the CD-ROM drive, or download the Service Pack onto your hard disk drive (be sure to select the 128-bit version if you are using the U.S./Canadian version of Windows NT).
2. Run the file from a command prompt, or from an explore window, locate NT4SP3_I.EXE on the CD.
3. Press Enter on the NT4SP3_I.EXE Service Pack Setup window to begin the installation.
4. Agree to the license and press Enter.
5. Select to create or not to create an Uninstall directory; then, press Enter twice to continue. (Uninstall directory is recommended.)
6. The Service Pack is then copied to your system.
7. If any message appears asking if you want to replace a newer or OEM file, select No to All.
8. After the installation is complete, click OK or press Enter to restart (reboot) the server.
