Smart Card Security Kit - Installation Instructions

Applicable to: World-Wide

Before you begin installing the kit, determine if you have AutoRun enabled on your computer system. If AutoRun is enabled, the installation utility introduction screen will automatically display 5-10 seconds after you insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive. (However, you must insert the CD after the Windows desktop screen displays.)

If you do not have AutoRun enabled on your system, complete the following steps in the order shown:

  1. Start Windows 95 or Windows 98, and insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click on Start, and then click Run.
  3. Type d:\setup, where d: is the letter designation of the CD-ROM drive, which might be different from d: on your system. Press Enter and an introduction screen will display. Read the text and click Continue to bring up the Installation Menu.
  4. From the Installation Menu, complete steps 1-8 listed below.

If you have AutoRun enabled on your system, an introduction screen will appear after you insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive. Read the text and click Continue to display the Installation Menu. From the Installation Menu, complete the following steps in the order listed:

Read first

  1. Click the View readme.txt button.
  2. Read the text carefully before continuing with the installation.

Install the DCOM and Smart Card Base Components
Note: If you are running Windows 95, you must install DCOM and Smart Card Base Components (SCbase) before you install the IBM Smart Card Reader. If you are running Windows 98, you must install SCbase. DCOM (Distributed Compact Object Model) allows options in Windows 95 to be efficiently distributed across different locations, such as a LAN or the Internet. As shown on the Installation Menu, DCOM should be installed only for Windows 95 systems; do not install DCOM if you are using Windows 98. SCbase provides files that enable applications on your computer system to communicate with Smart Cards. For more information, click the Info button located near the middle of the dialog box.

  1. To install DCOM, click the Install box in the DCOM section of the Installation Menu. You do not need to reboot the system after the DCOM installation completes. Therefore, click No when you are prompted to reboot.
  2. To install the Smart Card Base Components (SCbase), click the Install box in the Smart Card Base Components section of the Installation Menu, and reboot your system so the new settings will take effect.

Install the Device Driver

  1. Click the Install box in the device driver section of the menu.
  2. Insert the Smart Card Reader into any unused PCMCIA slot. For more information, click the Info button located near the middle of the dialog box. If the device driver was not previously installed, Windows will detect the reader and launch the installation wizard. This will follow normal Windows driver installation methods. Refer to your Windows documentation, if necessary. Click Go Back to return to the Installation Menu. If the device driver for the reader was previously installed, Windows will not attempt to install the driver again. If the reader is not recognized, your computer system might have a downlevel BIOS and/or downlevel PCMCIA drivers. For updates, contact your vendor or your vendor's Web site. IBM ThinkPad customers can obtain updates by going to the ThinkPad support Web site at: http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/support/thinkpad/thinkpad_support.html
  3. Insert the CD or the diskette containing the Gpr400.vxd file and click Next. The system will locate the installation component.
  4. Click Finish to complete the installation. The system will copy the necessary files to your computer and configures your machine to work with the reader.
  5. Once the GPR400 driver has been installed, you will be prompted to reboot your computer.
  6. Reboot your system. You must reboot your system after installing the device driver.

Install the Administrator Software
Click the Install box in the administrator software section of the Installation Menu to install the administrator software if this system will be used by both the administrator and the user. If you are the only user on the computer system, you will be both the administrator and the user. The administrator software will customize the IBM SmartCard Security Kit software for implementation. For more information, click the Info button located near the middle of the dialog box, or refer to the Administrator Manual on the CD for a complete understanding of the options available to the administrator. If the administrator will use a different system, install the administrator software on that system first. A diskette will be created that will be required when installing the user's software on this system. (You will need a blank formatted diskette to install the administrator software.)

Install the User Software

  1. Click the Install box in the user software section of the Installation Menu to install the user software. Installing the user software on the user's system sets up the individual aspects of the software, such as the encryption options and the user's name. For more information, click the Info button located near the middle of the dialog box, or refer to the User Manual on the CD for a complete description of the options available to the user. When preference files are requested, contact your administrator for the requisite files, or direct the software to the files on your system if you are acting as both the administrator and user. These files were created during the installation of the administrator software. You might have to specify the drive letter and folder where you stored the files, or you might have to insert the diskette that was created by the administrator software installation into the diskette drive.
  2. You will be prompted to enter an Administrator Personal Identification Number (PIN) during the installation of the SmartCard Security Kit. If you are both the administrator and the user, the Administrator PIN is preset to 1234 and should be changed as soon as possible. You must replace this PIN with another PIN of your choice (either four, six, or eight digits in length) during the installation. If you are not the Administrator, you will need to obtain the PIN number from the Administrator. Important: If you are the administrator, do not lose or forget this number. It cannot be reset if forgotten. After seven failed attempts to enter the correct code, the card will become permanently unusable, and will require replacement, which is not covered by the warranty.
  3. You will be prompted to enter a Personal Identification Number (PIN) during the installation of the SmartCard Security Kit. The preset User PIN for all Smart Cards is 1234. You must replace this PIN with another PIN of your choice (either four, six, or eight digits in length) during the installation.

Installing Additional Products

  1. There are other software products included on the CD. On the Installation Menu, click Additional Products for an additional page that guides you through the installation of those products. Installation of those products is optional.
