TP 701,755 - DIMM vs SO-DIMM Memory

Applicable to: World-Wide

Service Information:
This flash is for guidance purposes and explains important differences in memory technology used in the IBM ThinkPad 75x and ThinkPad 701 systems regarding DIMM and SO-DIMM memory.

The DIMM modules for the IBM ThinkPad 75x look almost identical in appearance to the SO-DIMM modules for the IBM ThinkPad 701, it can be difficult to tell the difference as they are both look physically the same size. However, THERE IS A FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE DIMM AND SO-DIMM MODULES WHICH MEANS YOU CAN NOT AND MUST NOT USE DIMM MODULES IN A TP-701 AND YOU MUST NOT USE SO-DIMM MODULES IN A TP-75X.

The IBM ThinkPad 75x systems use Dual In-line Memory Modules (DIMM) when a DIMM adapter is in place. The IBM ThinkPad 701 on the other hand uses Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Modules (SO-DIMM) which plug straight onto the system board of the IBM ThinkPad 701 without any adapter.

The DIMM modules for the IBM ThinkPad 75x operate on 5V, whereas the SO-DIMM modules for the IBM ThinkPad 701 operate on 3V. If you put a DIMM module for an IBM ThinkPad 75x in an IBM ThinkPad 701 then battery life will/may be reduced. If you put a SO-DIMM module suitable for an IBM ThinkPad 701 in an IBM ThinkPad 75x then IT WILL BLOW AND COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SYSTEM, therefore it is suggested and recommended that you ONLY use DIMM technology in IBM ThinkPad 750/755 systems and you ONLY use SO-DIMM technology in IBM ThinkPad 701 systems.
