Crystal overwrites the DSOUND.DLL file used with DirectX 5.

Detail:
Crystal overwrites the DSOUND.DLL file used with DirectX 5. After installing Directx 5 Crystal replaces DirectX's direct sound driver with the Crystal direct sound driver.

Crystal is in the process of testing a driver set with DirectX 5. Update will be available at at later date via Update Connector. Does not effect preload.

Positional sound has weird effect on Mercenaries.

Detail:
Crystal is not able to play more than 8 Positional sounds at one time. Mercenaries positional sound code will play more than 8 3D sounds at one time. The Crystal solution to this issue is to play all sounds above the total number of 8 as 2D sounds. This causes a weird affect on the sound of the game. One scenario would be the sound of a mech walking on the left-hand side of the screen. The sound of each step of the mech's walking is positional so it will be played out of the left speaker. If Crystal has a 3D resource available when the "step" occurs then the sound associated with that "step" will be played as a 3D sound (you will hear it out of the left speaker). If there is no resource available then the sound will be played as 2D (out of both speakers). As a mech is walking there is the potential that some steps will be played as 3D and some as 2D causing a weird effect as sounds will sometimes come from just the left speaker and sometimes out of both speakers. This issue relates to all positional sounds within Mercenaries. Another way that this problem could be seem is by toggling "group-fire on and of. While within a mission hit the "\" key. This will toggle "group-fire" on\off. Each time you do this a female voice will inform you of the change. If you continue to do this you will hear the level of her voice change up and down.

Answer / Workaround:
This is an artifact of the fact that Crystal only supports 8 positioned sound sources at the same time. Any beyond this are played 2D. Limitation of the "Clyde" chip. This problem is tied to defect 75268. Crystal needs to put in a fix that will allow Directx 5 to control positional sound. Until that happens these problems will still exist. Update will be available at a later date via Update Connector.

Floating Point Errors with Audiostation.

Detail:
In Audiostation, while playing a music CD, a MIDI sample, AND recording on the WAV player, you will get a "Floating Point error: Square Root of Negative Number" with the ORCH.EXE, AUDIOVIW.EXE, and MIDIPlay.EXE. You may also get an error that reads "Audio View Disk could not keep up with digital audio rate."

Answer / Workaround:
This is a limitation of both AudioStation and the Crystal drivers. Close AudioStation and relaunch. Problem will not occur unless you are playing both a music CD AND a MIDI sample while recording a WAV file. No workarounds available at this time.
