IBM ValuePoint - Memory parity errors using DOS/Windows

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
All models of PS/ValuePoint 6384/D, 6382/S and 6387/T systems may exhibit memory parity errors or system hangs while operating in a DOS/Windows 3.1 environment, with an L2 cache, 128KB or 256KB 'Write-Thru' cache option installed. This failure may occur on either "Preloaded" or customer software installed sytems.

Problem Isolation Aids:
PS/ValuePoint advanced diagostics will not fail during testing of the memory, system board or any other base system components.

Fix:
The L2 cache card, located in position U13 on the system board should be replaced. The following procedure should be used to obtain replacements:
1. Only affected parts delivered with orders listed in Greenock Document 93253GNK0528 to Country
Management, dated 10 Sept 93, should be returned.

2. Order replacement Cache cards via Sales using UPOS system. Credit will be provided upon
return of parts removed from the installed system.
P/N's Affected:
57G8900 / 60G1624 128K Write Thru (Install / Option)
70G6138 / 60G1625 256K Write Thru (Install / Option)
Replacement P/N's:
71G6143 128K Write Thru (Replaces 57G8900 and 60G1624)
71G6144 256K Write Thru (Replaces 70G6138 and 60G1625)

3. Parts should be returned to Greenock on a 'Charge' basis as follows:
57G8900 / 60G1624 at 38.43 Pounds Sterling.
70G6138 / 60G1625 at 76.87 Pounds Sterling.
Parts will be replaced charge on a one for one basis as follows:
71G6143 at 38.43 Pounds Sterling.
71G6144 at 76.87 Pounds Sterling.

4. Returned parts should be clearly identified and marked 'For Attention of John Smiley, Dept 419,
IBM Greenock'. All associated paperwork must be included with returned parts to permit quantity/
credit validation.

5. To assist in the identification of Cache cards the following codes may appear on labels attached
to the cards:
128K Write Thru - IDT7MP6104S33M or
IDT7MP6188S33M or
CYM9201ZPM-33C or
CYM9202ZPM-33C
256K Write Thru - IDT7MP6105S33M

Note:
If the system is experiencing parity errors and does not match the criteria given in this TIP, follow normal problem determination procedures to isolate the failing FRU.
