ADF Color Scanner - Common Problems

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
Assorted common problems relating to IBM ADF color scanner, with solutions or work arounds.

Resolution:
1. Copy functions from action manager or Iphoto don't work with HP deskjet printers 500/550/600/660 color models. A good test is to have the customer scan and save the file, then read the file back into paintbrush (part of windows) and print from there. If it fails, then it is a printer driver problem - refer them to the printer vendor. IF it prints OK - this is their work around, or you can try our new drivers. They fix most of the HP printer problems.

2. Can't send images from action manager into Delrina Winfax. This is resolved by the new drivers.

3. Problems with Word Perfect 5.1, 6.0, 6.1. - No definitive solutions yet, have them try different Word Processor program. Or, save file and import from Word Perfect as a work around.

4. Error message about missing or corrupt CONV.OVL file during install or operation of Recognita. - Have customer try to re-install software, and if this fails, it really was corrupt - some are. Send new disk or have customer download from BBS if available.

5. Scanner reports not ready after scanning one page/document. The scanner will work once each time the system is re-booted. After the first scan of each working session, the scanner is no longer seen.
- No definitive answer yet. Check for I/O address conflicts, or other software tasks held in memory. Part exchange is not the answer.

6. Action Manager won't perform copy function regardless of printer - The new drivers will correct this.

7. The scanner has trouble feeding paper and scanning multiple sheets. It may scan one sheet, but has trouble feed one sheet at a time. If multiple sheets are put in the tray, all are fed at once.- Have the customer try a different thickness of paper and clean the rubber feed roller with rubbing alcohol. Use the 90% pure isopropyl type. The 60% variety will leave residue that may make the problem worse.

8. The original version does NOT work with OS/2. The new version does. The new version should make it's way into manufacturing, if attempting to run under OS/2, check driver version number to ensure it is the new.

9. Lockup under Win 95, system hangs. - No final answer yet, the new drivers seem to resolve. Try them after ensuring no I/O conflict and making sure that the /Hx parameter is used.

10. No NT support.

11. A few customers have claimed that their system "blew up" after the initial install of the scanner adapter card. It may not power up or will hang at post. We seem to get about 1 or 2 of these per month. We have customer remove adapter card and re-start system. Try part exchange of adapter card first (from point of purchase).

12. Customer is getting a scanner response error when he attempts to use it. Check the scanner line in the CONFIG.SYS to see if the driver line exists and if the /Hx parameter is behind the line.

13. Customer is getting a No Paper in Scanner error. Check the paper input sensor, and make sure the power light is on.

14. Customer is receiving an inversed image after doing a scan. Go into advanced properties under Action Manager and check the inverse box.

15. Scanner scans in a blank page. Try various I/O settings, as last resort, do a part exchange on the Scanner bed first, then the adapter card (via dealer).

16. Scanner won't do the Copy Utility. Check printer type, if a laser printer - see how much printer memory is installed. If an older printer, other than the HP6xx series, have the customer get the updated printer drivers from their manufacturer. If an HP 6xx printer, make sure the customer has the latest version of the Action Manager software.

17. When setting up the fax utility in Action Manager, it will not find the fax machine. Go into the setup for Action Manager and make sure that a fax software package is installed.

18. When you scan in an image into I Photo Plus, it enlarges the image so that it takes up 4 screens. No known fix - you have to manually resize the image in I Photo Plus.

This is what we can come up with for now -- Most of the problems seem to stem from either the Copy utility, or the I/O problems.
