Applicable to: World-Wide
The Master Boot Record can be restored through any PC-DOS prompt. In order to restore the Boot files, you must boot the system with the MPEG installation diskette which came with computers preloaded with Windows 3.1 and OS/2.
If you cannot locate your MPEG installation diskette, you may obtain the necessary file by clicking here . Downloading this file to your hard drive and executing it will create the MPEG installation diskette.
1. Boot computer with MPEG installation diskette. During boot process, you will see a blue IBM logo. Immediately after this screen, you will see a black screen with "Starting PC DOS..." in the top left corner.
2. Press the "F5" key at this screen to bypass the startup files on the diskette. This will take you to an A:\> prompt.
3. To restore the Master Boot Record: At the A:\> prompt, type fdisk/mbr' and press "Enter" key. If you return to the A:\ prompt with out any messages, the MBR has been restored.
