Here are some tips and shortcuts for Microsoft Windows 3.1:

TIP #1 Print Screen: Copying Screens to the Clipboard
Pressing the <Print Screen> key in Windows does not automatically send the information to the printer as it does in DOS. Instead, it copies all of the information on the screen to the Windows Clipboard. Pressing <Alt>+<Print Screen> copies only the active (top) window to the Clipboard. Since Clipboard does not have a Print command to print the screen information, the information must be pasted into another application. Follow these steps:

1. Exit Clipboard.
2. Open the Write or Paint application located in the Accessories group.
3. Click on the EDIT menu.
4. Select PASTE.
5. The image Print Screen copied to the Clipboard will now appear in the window.
6. To print, click on the FILE menu and choose PRINT.

TIP #2 Checking System Resources
When Windows does not allow you to open any more windows because of a report of low memory, Windows gives you a way to check your system resources. Open the Program Manager Help menu and select "About Program Manager". You'll see the current mode Windows is running in, the amount of free memory, and the percentage of free system resources. The free system resources is perhaps the most important aspect of the report. It shows the percentage of unused space in a small but vital segment of memory. When 'Free System Resources' falls below 15 percent, you can't open another window no matter how much memory (RAM) you have. If you experience this problem, try reducing the number of program groups that are open in Program Manager and avoid keeping multiple documents open in the applications.

TIP #3 Speeding up the cursor in DOS programs running in Windows
To speed up the cursor in DOS-based programs running within Windows,

1. Start Windows.
2. Open the Control Panel (in the Main Group).
3. Double-click the Keyboard icon.
4. Set the 'Key Repeat Rate' to 'Fast'.
5. Exit the Control Panel .
6. Start your DOS program.

You can scroll, delete, and perform other operations with your cursor performing at faster speeds. (This will not always work with every application).

TIP #4 Freeing up disk space
To regain some usable disk space you may want to delete or "archive" unnecessary or seldom used Windows files. Before doing this it is a good idea to make a backup of your fixed drive to ensure that there is something to fall back on should you delete any important files. For starters, look in the C:\WINDOWS> directory and find all files that end with a .TXT extension such as WININI.TXT. Once these files are located (you may want to print out the contents of each file for future reference) you can delete them. You can also delete files that end with a .BAK extension. If you don't care about changing the background of Windows' desktop you can delete the wallpaper files which have the .BMP extension. Also consider deleting some of the basic Windows Applications and help files that you do not use (such as CALENDAR.EXE and CALENDAR.HLP, if you don't use the calendar). This can recover up to one megabyte of disk space. You can also delete printer driver files. These files are located in the C:\WINDOW\DRIVERS> directory and usually have a .DRV extension. This subdirectory contains many very important files that are necessary for Windows to run properly. However, it also stores many printer driver files that are not needed by all users. Be very careful when deleting any files in this directory. ALWAYS make a backup of the fixed disk before removing any files and NEVER delete any of the .DLL extension files. Looking at the file names that end with the .DRV extension you can usually determine the printer the driver is used for by the filename. For example, unless you use a 24-pin NEC printer you probably do not need the NEC24PIN.DRV file. If you have installed the Windows program yourself on the PS/1, there will not be a DRIVERS subdirectory with extra files.

TIP #5 Know more about your printer by asking Windows
To find out a little more about the printer you are using, Windows "Help" may be useful. Windows offers a lot of information about PostScript printers and PCL/HP (printer control language for HP and HP compatible printers). There is information about printing complicated jobs, ITC Zapf Dingbat fonts, scaling output on a PostScript printer, and more. To find this, perform the following procedure:

1. Open the Main group.
2. Choose the Control Panel and then Printers.
3. Highlight the name of an installed printer.
4. Select CONFIGURE.
5. Choose SETUP from the resulting dialog box. (This summons the final dialog box bearing the name of the printer you're configuring).
6. Click on the HELP button (if the button is not there, then no HELP text is available for the printer).

The HELP screen for many of the Laser printers offers instructions regarding font cartridges, graphics resolution, printer memory, soft-font downloads, and more..
