5250 Emulation PCMCIA Adapter - Configuring to run with Client Access in Windows 95

Applicable to: World-Wide

This is the configuration for connecting to an AS/400 using Client Access for Windows 95 and the IBM 5250 Emulation PCMCIA adapter. This help file is written with the assumption that all directory defaults were chosen when installing Client Access and this software is correctly configured. The software that came with the IBM 5250 Emulation Adapter must be installed too. The latest level is version 1.10, P/N 31H5170.

NOTE: This setup will disable the use of all other PC Cards in Windows 95.

1. From Windows, select Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager, Computer. Using "View Resources" make sure that you have these resources free: IRQ 5, I/O 2710-271F, and memory 000DC000-000DDFFF. If you are upgrading from a previous version of PC Support or Client Access, please make note of the resources you are currently using and use those in place of the above listed resources.

2. Use "Reserve resources" to reserve the 3 resources in the previous step. Click OK to save.

3. In "Device Manager" look for a "PCMCIA socket" icon. If there isn't one in the list, go to step #6, otherwise continue on.

4. Click on the + sign next to it. Select the "PCIC or compatible contoller" and choose properties.

5. In the "Device Usage" box at the bottom, UNcheck the "original configuration" box. If a docking station or other system configurations are present, diasble those as well. Select OK until you are out of the System Properties dialog box. You will be prompted to restart the computer. This must be done for these changes to take effect so choose restart when asked.

6. Restart the computer.

7. When you get the "Starting Windows 95" message as the computer is booting, press "F8" and select "Command Prompt Only"

8. From a DOS prompt, go to the directory where you installed the IBM 5250 Emulation Adapter support files. The default is c:\enb5250.

9. Run the program called HWCONFIG.EXE This will configure the method for which the card will be enabled.
- Hit enter to continue
- Choose "Select Adapter Type"
- Move the arrow keys and select "IBM 5250 Emulation PCMCIA Adapter". (The program will tell you that an initial configuration is being created, it will then ask if want the line "set enb5250=c:\enb5250" added to your autoexec.bat. Press n for no.)
- Move the arrows keys and select "Change Adapter Configuration"
- Select "Change PCMCIA Support"
- Select "Point Enable"
- Select "Change PCMCIA Controller"
- Select "Change PCMCIA Controller type"

This will vary depending on your machine type. For example If you have a Thinkpad, choose IBM Thinkpad. If you have a Sharp or a Toshiba notebook, choose the respective one for yours. If you don't know, choose the Intel.
- Hit escape on the change PCMCIA controller screen.
- Select "Change 5250 Emulation PCMCIA Adapter"
- Select the socket location, the I/O port, the memory and the interrupt. Choose 1 or 2 for the socket location depending on your machine. Choose 2718, DC00, and 5 respectively for the remaining values. IMPORTANT- This configuration requires that you insert the card into the same slot every time or you will receive an error when you try to enable it.
- Hit escape until you get to the "5250 Adapter configuration" menu. If you made any changes, you will be prompted to save your changes. Hit "y" to save them if asked.
- Select "Test Adapter Configuration" Answer "n" to the question if the adapter is in use.
- If the testing completes sucessfully, go onto the next steps. Otherwise go back over the steps and verify that you configured everything properly.
- Hit escape to exit the program.

10. Edit the config.sys making sure you have these two lines loaded: DEVICE=C:\windows\himem.sys DEVICE=C:\windows\emm386.exe noems x=DC00-DDFF

11. Restart the computer and hit "F8" when you see the message "Starting Windows 95", and choose "Command Prompt Only"

12. First the card is enabled. Change to the directory c:\enb5250 and type "enb5250".

13. Then load the adapter handler next. Change to the directory C:\progra~1\IBM\client~1 and type "e5250ah /md"

14. Load the twinax router next. Stay in the directory in step 13 and type "NSTWINAX"

15. Type "Win" to start Windows and connect to the AS/400 like you normally would.

16. After you connect to the AS/400, you can add the following lines at the end of your autoexec.bat file and boot normally: C:\enb5250\enb5250
C:\progra~1\IBM\client~1\e5250ah /md
C:\progra~1\IBM\client~1\nstwinax

Additional Information:
To re-enable the PCIC controller in Windows 95 for using other PC cards:
NOTE: You will not be able to run Client Access if you complete the following steps:

1. Make sure that the three drivers in the above step are not loaded. If you added them to the autoexec.bat add a "rem " statement in front of them to disable them.

2. In Windows 95, click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, PC card (PCMCIA).

3. Follow the directions in the PC Card Wizard to install your PC Card support. You will need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
