Aptiva - Using Broderbund's KIDPIX Program On The PS/1 2011 or 2121 Computer

Applicable to: United States

Some PS/1 owners have had problems with installing and using the Broderbund program KIDPIX on PS/1 2011 or 2121 computers. Some users tell us that when they try to start the program, it displays a message saying that the program cannot create the owner's file. The program stops at this point. There is a solution to this problem: the KIDPIX program requires the number of "file handles" to be increased. The FILES= line in the CONFIG.SYS dictates the number of file handles that your computer will have. This tells the computer how many files can be open at any one time on the computer. Newer PS/1 and Aptiva computers already have the FILES= line set to at least 30, and they should not be affected by the problem.

If the FILES= number is set to a figure lower than the number KIDPIX requires, the program cannot open a file for the owner information. You can edit the CONFIG.SYS file to increase the number following the FILES= line and make your PS/1 read the changed file. The CONFIG.SYS file is located in the root directory of the fixed drive. Use the IBM DOS option CUSTOMIZE HOW YOUR SYSTEM STARTS to make your system read either the built-in CONFIG.SYS or the one on the fixed drive. To allow the KIDPIX program to start properly, the C:\CONFIG.SYS file should be edited to increase the number of file handles. Then CUSTOMIZE should be used to ensure that your PS/1 is reading the changed file.

TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF FILE HANDLES ON THE PS/1 2011 OR 2121 COMPUTER:

1. From the four quadrant screen, click once on MICROSOFT WORKS. Click once on OPEN EXISTING FILE. At the "File to Open" prompt, type in C:\CONFIG.SYS and then click on <OK>.

2. Click once on OK to confirm opening the file as a word processing file. The file will open on your screen. Position the cursor on the line that starts "FILES=" and then press the <END> key on your keyboard. <BACKSPACE> over the existing digits and then type in 20 (or a higher
number if the documentation that comes with KIDPIX requires a greater number of file handles).

3. Click on FILE and click once on SAVE AS. Click once on TEXT under the box labeled "Format" and then click on OK. If asked, "Okay to save without formatting?" click on OK.

4. Click on FILE. Choose EXIT WORKS. If you are prompted about "SAVE CHANGES TO CONFIG.SYS?" click on "NO." Using SAVE AS already saved the changes.

TO CHANGE HOW YOUR SYSTEM STARTS:

5. Click on IBM DOS and double click on CUSTOMIZE HOW SYSTEM STARTS. Towards the bottom of the screen, you will see two lines that start "READ CONFIG.SYS" and "READ AUTOEXEC.BAT". Click once on "FROM DISK" on both lines. Click on "C:" for the DISK TO READ FROM. Press [ENTER] to save the changes.

6. Reboot your system, and you should now be able to use the KIDPIX program without problems.

On newer systems, you can use the System Configuration Editor in the Accessories group in Microsoft Windows to edit your CONFIG.SYS file.
