Aptiva - 2161 CD-ROM autorun problem
Applicable to: EMEA
Symptom:
Aptiva 2161 systems pre-loaded with Windows 95 may exhibit either of the following conditions when a CD with an AUTORUN file is placed in the 16X CD-ROM drive:
1. The application takes longer than expected to load and 2 copies of the application start.
2. The AUTORUN application will not start and the CD-ROM will continue trying to access the CD.
Problem Isolation Aids:
The affected CD-ROM drives can be identified by the part number information on the drive label. The brand name of the affected part is HITACHI 8-16X MAX CD-ROM, model CDR-8130.
IBM ASSEMBLY P/N: IBM FRU P/N:
- 76H6100 - 76H6101
- 76H6396
- 76H6104
Fix:
Do not replace the CD ROM drive. From within the Windows 95 preload, carry out the following:
This eliminates the failure symptom and returns the system configuration to that which would have resulted if the CD-ROM drive had met the requirements for initial set-up.

Other Information:
An AUTORUN file is an executable file that is intended to start automatically when the CD is inserted into the drive. Usually these files are INSTALL or DEMO files.
RETAIN Tip #H042374 has been released.
The problem has been corrected at source and a new P/N is being released for the HITACHI FRU.
