Aptiva - 2134/2176 - General information

Applicable to: World-Wide

2134 and 2176 models have Bootable CD-ROM drives. This makes the 'Recovery' Process very easy. Also, if your system becomes infected with a virus, there is no need to be concerned about infecting the 'Bootable Disk' you are attempting to clean the system with.

CD Drives: These models have 6X and 8X CD-ROM's. The CD-ROM is typically assigned to drive G, making it easy to add any additional hard drives.

IBMSUSPD.EXE: This new program displays a dialog the next time the computer is turned on after a Rapid Resume session. It is a hidden application that is launched automatically at startup time. It will stay as a background task monitoring "Suspend" from the Windows 95 Start Menu. If Rapid Resume is not enabled, another dialogue will occur prompting the user to enable Rapid Resume.

Internet Phone Program: It will work at 28.8 only if the modem hardware error checking is disabled. If error checking enabled, it will only operate at 14.4.

Window's NT Support: -None- for the video chipset and the version of the Mwave used. Mwave drivers are not slated to be developed for NT.

WARP Support: -None- Mwave drivers on the IBM BBS may function on this sound card, however, they are not supported by IBM. Results are on an 'AS IS' basis.

Partitions: All models 1.6 GB and above have partitioned drives.
2.0 GB - 1 GB, 1 GB
2.5 GB - 1 GB, 750 GB, 750 GB
3.2 GB - 1 GB, 1GB, 600 GB, 600 GB

Rapid Resume: Power switch now acts like a real power switch. Changeable in the Setup Utility. Selective activity monitoring allows user to select what devices are monitored for Rapid Resume to work.

Token Ring Card, G-planar: Be sure to disable Serial Port (IRQ 3) monitoring so Rapid Resume and Standby will work. NOTE: Networking may be possible with Aptiva's but is not supported by IBM.

USB (Universal Serial Bus), G-planar: This is a new type of serial port, supporting throughput of up to 12 Mbit/sec with up to 127 devices attached. This port takes the place of one of the serial ports.

DIMM Socket, G-planar: Dual In-line Memory Module (DIMM) socket is available. This is for a 64-bit memory module. DIMM's supported: 168 pin, 8 or 16 MB, 60 ns, gold-lead, EDO, unbuffered DRAM.

Memory Options: There are no unique IBM Aptiva options for machine types 2134 and 2176. However, a number of industry standard memory components available from Options by IBM will work in the Aptiva. These are listed below:

Memory Description OBI P/N

System memory* 8MB (2 x 4MB) SIMM, tin-lead, non-parity 76H0257

16MB (2 x 8MB) SIMM, tin-lead, non-parity 76H0258

Cache 512KB Pipelined Burst SRAM, CELP module 76H0237

*NOTE: Must be added in matched pairs on those system with Total Image 3D.

Software: Although various application software has been tested, the user should consult the software vendor to validate support for specific applications.
