TP 560/E - Xircom and 3COM combo cards in Windows NT 4.0

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
The network side of the combo card functions correctly, but when attempting to configure the modem side under Windows NT 4.0, the computer locks up.

CONFIGURATION:
ThinkPad 560,560E running Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 using a 3COM 3C562D or a XIRCOM PS-CEM-28BT combo PCMCIA card.

RESOLUTION:
These configurations have proven to work with the 560 and 560E under Windows NT 4.0 Workstation with Service Pack 3. Other settings may work, but these settings definitely worked in a lab environment. You may need to add the appropriate protocol depending on your scenario. You will want to contact the manufacturer of the adapter for further assistance.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
3COM 3C562D-COMBO
The main problem was that the default IRQ was 15. The combo card will work at IRQ 3, 10, or 11. To configure the adapter, go to Control Panel, then Network, then Adapters, then Add, and finally Have Disk. Insert the latest device driver diskette for the adapter to install the drivers. When configuring the adapter you can use the following settings:

I/O Port Address

0x300

Memory Address

0xD0000

Network Interrupt

3

Media Type

TP(10BaseT)

LanOnly Mode

Disabled

Com Port

COM 2

When that is finished, remove the diskette and restart the computer. After the computer has finished booting up, go to Control Panel and click on Modem to install a new modem. Place a check in the box that says "Don't detect my modem: I will select it from a list". Then select Have Disk. Insert the diskette that came with the adapter and select the appropriate modem, in this scenario, the 3Com(3C562D-3C563D MNP10)Etherlink III LAN+336 Modem PC Card. Finally select the appropriate COM port and after restarting the computer, both functions of the adapter should work properly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
XIRCOM PS-CEM-28BT CreditCard Ethernet + Modem 28.8
The main problem is that the default I/O Port address is 320. It must be set to 280. To configure the adapter, go to Control Panel, then Network, then Adapters, then Add, and finally Have Disk. Insert the latest device driver diskette for the adapter to install the drivers. When configuring the adapter you can use the following settings:

I/O Port Address

0x280

Memory Address

0xC8000

Network IRQ

3, 10, or 11 (any one of the three work)

Transfer Mode

I/O Mode

Cable Type

Auto Detect

Modem Settings
Port Address

0x2F8

Link Integrity was only option used from right hand column

When that is finished, remove the diskette and restart the computer. After the computer has finished booting up, go to Control Panel and click on Modem to install a new modem. Place a check in the box that says "Don't detect my modem: I will select it from a list". Then select Have Disk. Insert the diskette that came with the adapter and select the appropriate modem, in this scenario, the Modem of Xircom Ethernet+Modem (CEM 28.8). Finally select the appropriate COM port and after restarting the computer, both functions of the adapter should work properly.

Additional Information:
Most combo cards Modem and Network function share a single IRQ. If you want to change any of the resources for either Modem or Network, use the manufacturer's configuration utility which is usually in Control Panel/ Network / Adapters. None of the adapters appear to work under NT on IRQ 15 which can be the default.

If you are having difficulty getting the modem to recognize the correct COM port, you may need to go to Control Panel / Ports and delete all the COM ports, then reboot. As a last resort you may want to remove any other card configurations that are installed in the machine.
