Aptiva - How to install new software in Windows 3.x

Applicable to: United States

Read any installation instructions, if provided, that come with an application before attempting an installation of software in Windows 3.1. Although the initial steps for installing most Windows applications are basically the same, the steps beyond the point of starting the installation can vary greatly. Below are the initial Windows application installation steps only.
1. Close all group windows and applications running on the Windows Program Manager desktop. For some applications it may also necessary to disable any antivirus application for the duration of the installation procedure.

2. Place the Installation diskette for the new application in the A: drive (or place the new application CD in the CDROM drive).

3. Click on File on the Program Manager toolbar.

4. From the pull-down menu click on Run...

5. If the new application is on diskettes, in the Command Line field type "a:\setup" and click on OK, or press Enter.

6. If the new application is on a CD, in the Command Line field type "x:\setup" and click on OK, or press Enter. (x represents the drive letter for the CD ROM in your system; substitute the appropriate drive letter for x on your
system.)

Note: If step 5 or 6 generates an error message stating the file could not be found, type "install" instead of setup. Although most Windows applications use the Setup command, a few applications use Install.

7. Follow any prompts or answer questions that may appear as part of the installation process.

8. Many Windows applications will require you to shut the system down after the installation is complete before the newly installed application can be run.
