Aptiva - 2134/2176 - How to remove and reinstall Mwave drivers

Applicable to: United States

Follow this procedure if you encounter a problem with your Mwave sound/modem card and need to reinstall the drivers. This procedure should be used only on C series systems of type 2134-Cxx and type 2176-Cxx, and does not include the model 2176-C6V.

Note: Before beginning this procedure, verify that you have the latest Diagnostics and Utilities CD. The latest version of the CD now available is part number 76H4681, and has a yellow hub. If you do not have the latest CD, do not attempt the following procedure as software corruption may occur. You should call the IBM PC HelpCenter at (800) 772-2227 for a replacement CD.

Uninstall Mwave drivers procedure:

1. Insert your Diagnostics and Utilities CD-ROM.

2. Open the Aptiva Installer by clicking "Start" and then select "Aptiva Installer".

3. Click the "Show Installed Programs" tab.

4. Click on the icon labeled Mwave Drivers.

5. Select the "Uninstall" button.

6. An "Mwave Installation" box appears with a message stating that you are about to delete an entire directory from the system. Click "Yes.".

7. Another "Mwave Installation" box appears warning you that personal files in the Mwave directory will be lost. Again, click "Yes."

8. A message will appear saying that the Mwave has been removed from the system. Click "OK."

9. An information window will appear stating that the computer needs to be restarted. Click "OK."

10. Remove the Diagnostics and Utilities CD. The Mwave software has now been successfully removed from the system.

Reinstall Mwave drivers procedure:

1. Insert your Diagnostics and Utilities CD-ROM.

2.Open the Aptiva Installer by clicking "Start" and then select "Aptiva Installer".

3. Click the "Show Uninstalled Programs" tab.

4. Click on the icon labeled "Mwave Drivers".

5. Select the "Install" button. The Mwave installation utility will initialize.

6. You will be prompted for the desired location for the Mwave files. The default path is C:\MWW, do not change this setting. Click "OK."

7. The Mwave files will decompress to your hard disk.

8. When the files have been copied to your hard disk, an information box will appear stating that "The information in c:\windows\mwave.reg has been successfully entered into the registry." Click "OK."

9. A second box will appear with a message about installing the MIDI samples in order for the MIDI synthesizer to work properly. This is normal, click "OK."

10. Another box will appear saying that you need to restart the computer, remove the Diagnostics and Utilities CD from the drive and click "YES."

11. When the computer is restarted, Windows will automatically detect the Mwave hardware and install its drivers. It may take a few minutes while Windows builds a driver information database.

12. Once Windows has finished its hardware installation routine, an Mwave DSP Installer windows will appear with the message: "You must shut down Windows 95 and TURN OFF SYSTEM POWER before you can use you Mwave DSP software." Click "OK."

13. Shut the system down. Once the power is off, turn the system back on. Your Mwave software has now been reinstalled.

Note concerning the 33.6 Mwave drivers

If you installed the updated Mwave drivers in order to upgrade you Mwave modem to 33.6 Kbps, then the reinstall procedure is slightly different.

1. Uninstall the Mwave drivers according to the instructions above, except for step 4. The original Mwave driver icon should now be under the "Show Uninstalled Programs" tab. You should select the 33.6 Mwave drivers icon to uninstall.

2. Reinstall the original Mwave drivers according to the instructions above.

3. You will now need to reinstall the 33.6 update. Reopen the Aptiva Installer and click on the "Show Uninstalled Programs" tab.

4. Click the icon labeled "Mwave 33.6 modem upgrade drivers", then click the Install button.

5. You will be prompted for your 33.6 upgrade CD, insert the CD and click OK.

6. A screen will appear welcoming you to the driver installation program, click "Yes" once you have read all this information.

7. It will take a few minutes while the program initializes. A message box will appear stating that your old Mwave drivers are about to be replaced. The system will now perform several tasks on its own as it removes your original Mwave drivers and installs the updated drivers. The system will automatically restart Windows twice, decompress the Mwave files, and redetect the Mwave hardware. You do not need to interact with the installation program at all during this process.

8. When the installation is complete, an "Mwave DSP Installer" window will appear stating: "You must shut down and TURN OFF SYSTEM POWER before you can use you Mwave DSP software." Click "Yes" to shut down the system.

9. Turn the system back on. You will see a "Mwave 33.6 Upgrade Installed Successfully" message. Click "OK".

10. You are done. The 33.6 upgrade has been reinstalled on your system.
