TP 380,385 - 3Com 3C562D PC Card doesn't work

Applicable to: United States

SYMPTOM:
When first installed, Windows 95 recognizes the 3com (3c562d/3c563d) Etherlink III Lan + 33.6 Modem PC Card okay and installs the Multifunction Adapter, the Network Card and the modem, but when you check in the Device Manager the network card has an exclamation sign on it, saying the card is not present or not working (code 10). When you run the modem diagnostics, a message appears saying it was unable to open the port.

CONFIGURATION:
Any ThinkPad 380,385 system running Windows 95 using the 3Com 3C562D PCMCIA card.

SOLUTION:
1. Open up my computer
2, Go into the power Icon
3. Under the PC-Card Modems Tab
4. Un-check the Box that says (Turn off PC-Card modems when not in use)
5. Click on apply at the bottom of the window
6. The reboot the machine
7. Check device manager and the card should have three listings
one will be a card manager listing, one will be under the networking adapters for the
ethernet card and the third will be under modems for the modem portion of the card.

This can be done before or after the card is installed it makes no diffrence. The key is to make sure that the (turn off PC-Card modems when not is use) box is not checked. This will allow the card to function all the time and allow the ethernet to work. This seems to apply only to this card and there may be a driver in the future that will fix this problem.
