ADF Color Scanner - Quick Problems and Solutions

Problem:
Scanner power indicator is always on, can it be turned off?
Solution:
Power light indicator should always be on when the interface cable of the scanner is attached to the interface card when the interface card is properly installed into the system.

Problem:
Scanner indicator light is not on?
Solution:
If scanner is able to scan, suspect power indicator failure. If scanner fails to power on, turn system power off, and ensure interface adapter has been seated firmly. If scanner power continues to fail, reseat interface adapter, and interface cable connected at interface adapter and scanner. If problem continues, suspect bad interface adapter or scanner.

Problem:
Images are of poor quality when scanned.
Solution:
Check the Windows video driver. This can be done outside of Windows by using SETUP from the Windows directory. Use a video driver that supports more than 16 colors for the video chipset. Check system user's guide for video chipset or Windows video support driver.

Problem:
Vertical lines appear in scanned image.
Solution:
Lift front cover of scanner slowly. DO NOT remove the cover, but lift approximately 1" and carefully clean the scanning glass with a lint-free cloth. DO NOT touch the glass, and do not use a cleaner on the cloth.

Problem:
Paper fails to feed or jams.
Solution:
NEVER pull the paper out of the scanner. Use the EJECT button the paper becomes jammed in the scanner. Attempt to flatten the paper if folded or curled, remove all fastening devices from the paper, fan the pages to keep them from sticking, and use the paper carrier with slides adjusted to paper width.

Problem:
What other software can be used with the scanner.
Solution:
The scanner will emulate an HP SCANJET IIcx. Ensure that the scanner software to be used is able to emulate an HP SCANJET IIcx.

Problem:
Image is too dark or too light.
Solution:
Attempt to adjust the contrast, brightness, or resolution settings from software scanning controls. The Action Manager software that is supplied with the scanner will have 12 icons. 4 will be used (depending upon installation process) such as the Scan and Save Utility. The Undefined Actions can be custom configured. To check setup, use right mouse button to click on the action icon (SCAN and SAVE). Select Setup from Action Manager's Action Creator screen (next to the Action Definition Application entry). From the ADF Color Configuration screen, use the slide bars to change brightness, contrast, and resolution setup. Also, check to see if inverse image is checked or unchecked. Use FILE SAVE CHANGES to save changes made in setup.

Problem:
Sanned image is black.
Solution:
Adjust the software brightness adjustment as in above steps.

Problem:
No image is displayed after a document is scanned.
Solution:
Adjust software contrast and brightness controls as discussed in above steps. Scan images face down when inserted onto carrier. Ensure that the I/O address for the scanner device driver loaded in the CONFIG.SYS matches the hardware interface adapter jumper settings. Also, ensure that the interface cable is attached to the scanner and adapter.

Problem:
Error RE_00X.XXX does not exist during OCR action.
Solution:
Select OCR action from the Action Creator and use SETUP to correct your editor information.

Problem:
How to test scanner?
Solution:
Insert paper into scanner carrier. The paper should begin to feed and stop when it has reached the scanning position. Hit EJECT and the paper should continue to be fed through the scanner (standard 8.5"x11" sheet).

Problem:
Can the ADF scanner diskettes be applied to any system?
Solution:
Yes the updated ADF scanner diskettes may be applied to any system that has an ADF Color scanner attached.

Problem:
Missing the small black jumpers that are used to configure the I/O address on the adapter.
Solution:
The jumpers can be purchased from any local computer equipment store.

Problem:
The cable will not connect to the parallel port.
Solution:
The scanner is not supported through parallel connection. The scanner can only be connected to the interface adapter.
