IBM PC340 - File and memory errors with IBM OBI memory option (US Only)

Applicable to: United States

SYMPTOM:
When two OBI 8MB SIMMs, (OBI 16MB EDO SIMM kit P/N92G7320) are added to an IBM PC340 system with two other 8MB SIMMs, the system returns a memory size error and recognizes all all 32MB of installed memory.

On the next boot-up the system returns another memory size error and may only recognize 20 or 24MB of installed memory. Subsequent reboots will give no post errors. Upon trying to load an operating system, the system will return various operating system errors.

In addition to the above symptoms, users may also experience one or both of the following:

1) When transferring files over a network using a PCI network adapter, the transfer results in unusable files. Failures have been confirmed with the OBI SIMMs when used as the only SIMMs in the system and when used in combination with other SIMMs. The failure DOES NOT occur when using ISA network adapters.

2) With only two of the affected 8MB SIMMS in an IBM PC340 system, video is corrupted during POST (ex: IBM logo is unrecognizable) and the system hangs with the corrupted image on the screen.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:
All failures are seen after installing OBI 16MB EDO SIMM kit P/N92G7320 by itself or combined with two other 8MB SIMMs.
Affected SIMMs will have manufacturing P/N40H8548 and a header code of J11XW.

FIX:
If the symptoms match as described above, replace the memory with FRU P/N92G7321.
