CrossBrand - Operating Systems - Overview of SuperStor/DS

Applicable to: Canada, United States

SuperStor is the disk compression program supplied with PC-DOS 6.3. Using it, you will be able to put more files on your hard drive due to the way it effectively increases the storage space on the drive. No additional hardware is needed, and the DOS utilities, such as FORMAT and CHKDSK, have been enhanced to support the use of SuperStor.

One of the features in SuperStor that is largely unknown but quite important to the operation of the system is that it will safeguard the data integrity of the files on the compressed drive. That is, it will prevent you from rebooting during critical operations. Such events will normally take less than a second to complete, but providing protection for such an occurrence when it is critical that data be written helps to ensure that the data files on the drive will be correct.

Another protection provided by SuperStor is that, when an error is detected on the compressed drive, the drive will be set to Read-Only status, thus preventing programs from writing to the drive until the error is corrected. To correct these conditions, start up the SSUTIL command from the DOS prompt and select the Repair Disk function.

SuperStor can be used to compress diskettes, and the compressed diskettes can have a small program included with them that will allow you to use the compressed diskettes on another system that does not have SuperStor installed.

A Preview function allows you to find out how much the drive can be compressed. When errors are detected on the drive, you can run the Check Disk function of SSUTIL to determine what the errors are and how to fix them. The Disk Tuneup option of SSUTIL can be used to determine if the drive needs to be defragmented or otherwise optimized for better performance. Other facilities, such as being able to assign passwords to a drive, help to make SuperStor a very functional and safe disk compression program to use.

Note: The helpcenter offers no warranty support for compressed harddrives.
Disk compression works best with smaller harddrives.
